Default How do you deal with chariots?

My armies keep getting routed by chariots. They slaughter any cavalry and infantry I send to stop them and outmaneuver my phalangites with ease. Matters are made even worse by the fact that egypt usually wins the missile duel and britain uses head hurlers to add to their shock effect.

I haven't really figured out what to do about it. Is there some standard method for countering them?

    lol noob box.

Anyway m8 u might want to ask veteran players about the Catabox. that technique lets your cataphracts counter chariots. brits can be simply countered with carthage and egypt should respond well to greece or macedon. pontus is also an option. unless ofc u dont know how to use those factions effectively. in that case start praying

You have just given the reason why Egypt and Brits are so powerful missiles combined with chariots
You must win the archer war (or at least cut their archers down a lot)
Personally I prefer Carthage but a lot of people like Greece or Macedon as counters and I would take a lot of sacred band infrantry, baleric and normal slingers and 2 fast cav to counter chaz archers
I wouldn't build a box until I had taken out the archers as archers eat boxes for dinner

Play defensive but get the archers / hurlers and it's hard for egypt/brits to win with phallanx vs chariots

Yeah those chariots are nasty buggers. For Scythed chariots, mostly you just need to shoot flaming arrows at them for them to run amok, and they usually do you no more harm (unless they are behind your lines, then they massacre your troops from the rear). But Chariot Archers are a pain, and you either have to use archers or missile cavalry to bring them down, or swamp them in cavalry, which usually results in your own heavy losses.

I've been experimenting and I've started having good success against them with elephants. I play at 10k though so taking them is a huge gamble.

As the host I feel obligated to choose my faction first and to be the attacker so picking my faction to counter my opponent's and turtling aren't very appealing options.

I stay on defense with pikes. And keep my calv at home. Wait for them to come and get bogged down with your men.

Well is simple frie here are some stepsto take in battle, I'm a 4 year veteran of RTW...

    1) Never play aggresive unless the enemy is completely routed

    2) Always have Missles up front and skirmish on so tey can fall back behind phalaxes and at that point turn off fire at will.

3)Put the weakest infanty up front

    4) Let them charge you and then while they are busy:
    a) Fully charge with all but missle units
    b) Charge with you heavy infantry
    c) Go around the enemy with cavalry and charge from behind

    5) Any cavalry even bararian cavalry can take out chariots. After breaking through their hit points they die like flies! If anything they are within the top five easiest to defeat.

ps. I guess it all depend on how you were raised on the game...when I played as the Julii 4 years back I had to face the Britains this is probably why I can fly through them so esily today...

Good quality archers such as Cretans or Foresters will swiftly beat chariot archers, if they fail then jav cav such as numidians are quicker and so can out run and pepper them.

For normal chariots you just have to stop them, once they cannot move then they will eaisly crumble.

I can usually tell which opponents will use the noob box and prepare for it. Making it an easy win .

If the player is rude or has a throw away name and picks greece or macedon you can pretty much guarantee that he's going to form a noob circle.

The Duke of Dunwich and surrounding fiefdom

For any who are interested by my FF on occurrences in Rhun and beyond; I have begun a new project (not because the old one is finished, just opening more room for ideas) about one of the minor characters, Rankal. It is in the Third Age AAR index and here is the link http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=376994

I'm still learning the game myself but I'd say bring slingers, pressure him into opening it or attack at the corners and work your way into the flanks of the phalanxes. Sometimes you can outright crush one side if you weaken it with missiles and time your charge well.

Get a lot of archers and focus on destroying his/her missles and then just shoot the infantry in the box in the backs. When weak points are exposed and you have used all your missles attack with your infantry. Then the battle is over and if the game is no rules you just have to use your art wisely and destroy theirs (which is easier because they are confined to a smaller space). When dispatching catapults use the regular attack and when attacking units use the special ability.

do not fight them w/ cav unless they are in guard mode and you outnumber them at least 3 : 1

as far as inf is concerned... make sure you are not running when chariots charge... spears are better than swords, phalanx better than anything...

fire archers will kill char eventually esp long range
