Default How much Energy does my PC use?

Or Menergy, because my PC is that manly

Alright so heres the story. I always download stuff before I go to bed, usually large files (games) so that I don't have slowed bandwidth when I'm using my PC. So I downloaded CoH off of steam lastnight and I was excited to play it this morning. When I awoke My PC was shutoff, I asked me dad and apparently he shut it off.

"It uses to much energy, 600W!!" Is what my dad said.

Now Obviously he knows nothing about computers, and power wattages scale with the amount you use your hardware, now how much energy would my PC use with my monitor turned off, and running idle just downloading a game? in my signature is the hardware I have, and I'm using a Antec 900 case which has 3 120MM fans and 1 200MM, running on low.

I'm thinking around 60-70W? I'm sure its no more then a TV.

Should be around 40 watts not including your monitor, which I assume is turned off or sleeping at night.

Fans draw barely any power on low so don't worry too much.

Your rig would draw around about 130-140 watts on idle (the same as when you leave to download). As for rest of your machine tell you Dad the 600 watts is the maximum amount of power your power supply can draw from the wall which is different from the total amount of power it uses when you’re playing games or encoding videos.

Have a look at this review of the HD 4850, on idle the whole computer draws 131 watts.

Use a Kill A Watt or something to measure. It's not going to be 600 W, but it might well be significant.

Did your DL finish before dad turned your machine off though? Guess you should have built a stealth PC instead. LOL!!!
