I am still wondering how to join a crusade or a jihad. Is it a button you press or what?

Yes choose your general plus you need to have a couple of units with him . Right click on him and you should see an Icon in the bottom of the page if you put your cursor on it will say join crusades. Like I said you need to have a couple of units if not the Icon will be grey...
Then after you have joined the crusade you will be able to recruit crusade units at cheap cost....
Hope this helps

Both ways bring up the same screen, I believe.
Cogito Ergo Vicco
K thanks guys.
Well, let's clear up some things.
1. A crusade can be initiated either by you, or the Pope by default. If you decide to initiate, go to the Pope's screen, there should be a little button you should click, writing "Recommend a crusade". A screen will appear, showing possible target cities. You have to choose one, and recommend it to the Pope as a possible crusade target. The Pope decides whether the proposed city is a worthy crusade target. Your Papal favor points affect his decision. Shall he accept that the city is a worthy target, he immediately declares a crusade.
2.The Pope declares a crusade to a specific city.
In order to join, after a crusade has already been declared, you need a family member and at least 6 units. You can find a button to join the crusade in the army screen, after you have the required number of units. Click it, and your army will join the crusade, and have crusader mercenary units available for recruit.
About Jihads, they function in the same way, but they have two separate ways of starting.
1. You can initiate them through an Imam with more than 6 piety points. Through their screen, just like the crusade.
2. Another faction declares a Jihad,
You join in the same way listed above, exactly like the crusades...
So the General of Family Member must have 7 other units (for a stack total of 8 units) to be able to join a Crusade?
@Flavius Silvanus: Yes
@Ludwig Van Beethoven: An Imam only needs 4 piety to call a Jihad.
Officer to a soldier who refuses to fight: There three types of soldiers who don't have to fight. They are called KIA, MIA and POW and you are not one of them.
Tosa will be missed.
This is a tip from the tips/shortcuts section which I will repeat here with apologies to whoever first suggested it:
When you are just about to capture the target city of the crusade, be sure to convert as many of your units as you can into crusaders. After you have captured the city, the crusade will end and all your crusading forces will gain an experience point.
I got 254 experience like that in my last campaign.![]()
The last of the famous international playboys.
There is a icon to click on your general's stats and there you can join the Jihad or Crusade.
