    Icon1 Dread and Chivalry

Oke, so far this is what I've understood from reading people's posts and confirming them

Dread generals increases unrest and law for a town
Chivalry increases population growth and(something else?)

I also heard that dread generals will have an easier time routing an enemy while chivalry ones increase morale of your own troops.

How exactly does this work in battle, if you had 2 generals fighting at the same time, one chivalry and one dread?

(Optimally you'de have the chivalry one standing behind your formation, while dread does the ambush?

(and on a completely different note, the trait Can Tell a Tale, does this come available if you listen to his entire speech? :hmmm

Only the traits of the commanding general affect the battle. And no, listening to a general's speech does not affect his chances of getting Can Tell a Tale.

I suppose if you have a high chivalry general and are up against an equally high dread general or vice versa, the two would just cancel each other out. The enemy general drains your morale but your own boosts it.

Robbo is right, Dread drains the Moral of your troops and chivalery make you troops gain moral.

When you have two general in the same army it's always the one that as more command points that will lead your troops into battle

Speaking of traits, how do you get the pious ruler trait?

if you want to increase piety, finish building churches while they're in a settlement and get priest-type-units to travel in their army. if you build one small church for the first time, they get one, piety, getting them to the next level, requires more church points (larger the church, the more church points). each progressive level requires more church points. traveling with imam/priests does the same thing, but with another or other traits (not sure if it's just one trait or multiple).

my understanding is that increased morale through general stars only affects people close to the general. something i've never had explained to me is whether dread/chivalry works the same way, or if it affects everyone on the battle. Also do multiple generals increase the affect circle of general stars. I know someone said early that only one general has an affect, but are we really sure about this, i've heard different people say different things.

Now that it's clear what chivalry and dread do, I'd like to ask how do you actually gain chivalry.

I decided to play my new Welsh campaign as a chivalric one, so far I've won about 10 battles, always releasing the prisoners, ending the battle when I have the option and always occupying enemy castles. Yet my king has with these actions gained the traits of merciless mauler and cruel and cunning, giving +3 and +2 dread respectively.

This is highly disappointing and I'm almost ready to go back to the barbaric ways of slaying enemies after battle like I used to. So how do you gain chivalry?

You gain Chivalery by being good like:

    1-Releasing prisonners of a battle
2-Never sack or exterminate cities that you capture
3-Join crusades and succeed in them

Wait, does continuing a battle to kill all the enemy troops give you dread?? Because I'm also playing "chivalrous" campaign but I always continue the battle to get my troops experience. But if it really gives dread, I may need to stop that...

OK one other thing that you need to do is do not attack routing units with your general it will give you Dread traits

Get your general involved in battles more. Let him soak up some damage and slay some enemies. That means he'll get traits like "Marks of War" and "Fair Fighter" which I think leads up to "Champion of Honour".

Oh. I always do that because I want his bodyguard to get experience. I guess I just need to get him more involved before everyone starts routing. Thanks(and rep) for that!
EDIT: Actually no rep because I did it too soon before...so if someone else wants to rep Rebel for me, thanks.

Thx for the Rep you can give it to me later on when you have given Rep to 5 other people .

But Like Alex said you can fight with your general, it will give you Marks of War,The best one is Brutally Sacred but don't send him killing routing units that will definatly cause you to gain Dread, unless that's what you want.

On a side note having a Dread leader with alot of other general's the same it will affect your Global Rep

THAT explains all the dread points!.... I bring along some swift light cavalry so I never kill/capture less than 90% of an enemy army. >____>

dread generals are a great help especially in the beginning of the campaign, when you are facing militia armies and weak units. an early rout there and you rip apart your oponents army

however as soon as you face the mongols and timurids you will want to have high chivalry generals. of all strategies that I read here about how to deal with mongols and timurids the one that proofed most effective was the high chivalry general keeping his troops together. Most troops are able to cope with their mongol and timurid opponents but only if they stand and fight.

I think that this is the best benefit you get from a chivalric general. all other benefits are nice to haves but not really nescessary. the difference between chivalric and dread generals is most felt there...
