Completely bored of Total War

It finally happened.

I've been a pretty big TW fan since .. 2001-2002 maybe? My first TW was a copy of Shogun Warlord Edition, and I absolutely loved it. It sparked my little 12-13 year olds ass passion for samurai history, I bought book after book, never laid eyes on an anime, and digested it all, to this day I've preserved my absurdly large knowledge of samurai history.

Then I got Medieval I, it was responsible for getting me to actually enjoy medieval Europe and the Middle East especially, the music for all these games also, stuck with me for life. So goddamn atmospheric.. Pure amazing.

I was always a huge fan of mods, the first great mod I played, that truly left a huge impression on me, was the now ancient, Hellenic Total War, and the Persian Invasion expansion. The music was amazing, the battles even more so, and it was so good it could have EASILY been it's own game, one would never know it was based on Medieval I, you'd think it was the III installment in TW..

It ALSO, sparked a huge interest in ancient Greece with me.

I was originally on totalwar.org, where I followed Rome from day 1 it was announced, pretty much. I remember when Europa Barbarorum was an attempt to get CA to change the units it was making, and not a mod. Back in the days when it's only signature was a black and white box with gothic font in it.

I read every EB thread ever, watched as CA completely spit on the Roman era and brought us the most kiddy looking skins one could think of. Pretty nasty looking stuff.

Rome came, I bought it first day it was out. Spent months only playing the campaign map and never seeing a battle, because I had to wait til Christmas to get a graphics card for it.. lol.. all those auto resolve battles, I don't know why I enjoyed it, but I guess I did.

Then it finally wore off. I saw how horrible the games skins and units were in comparison to mod produced stuff, I got extremely bored with it, blablabla.

Medieval II came, I bought it day after Christmas, ... I thought it was amazing as hell... I thought the skins had improved ridiculously well since Rome,then I saw the mods and immediately hated vanilla.

I helped burrek with his skin pack, used them, and enjoyed the game again. Then came BC, it took forever to come out but when it finally did.. finally, a mod had made me take interest in an era again. I became fascinated by the medieval middle east with that mod..

Yet through all this, I've only ever once completed a campaign in a TW game, and that was the Mongols in Mongol Invasion, on STW.

You might ask why? And I guess for as long as I was ignorant on an era, I had an interest in TW. I loved watching the battles for awhile but eventually, it got boring.

The Campaign, I think has always been what I hate the most. Medieval I's campaign I greatly enjoyed. Rome and Medieval II's? The most boring, time consuming thing ever. Even today, I have no fun with any campaign, in any TW game. I don't know why.

So.. I gave TW another chance after months of not playing BC. I reinstalled Rome gold edition (arguably the worst TW game ever made, I know) and finally, after years of waiting, and years of reading about, and following, and supporting, and talking to plenty of the members, played EB.

What an epic dissappointment, I've been waiting years to play.. something unplayable. It's so horrendously slow, .. I deleted after one day. The skins are gorgeous, the history was amazing.. but thats just it..

I enjoyed reading the history and looking at the screens, much, much, much more then actually playing EB.

Then I thought about it, it's not EB's fault, they made an amazing game. It's mine I guess.

I've had an epiphany, no matter what mod I play, no matter what TW game I play, I'am bored to tears, of Total War.

The battles, the one thing that keeps the game interesting.. are just so easy to win, but even then.. it's so.. unsatisfying. It's just lost that virgin appeal man, if Total War battles had a vagina, ing it would be like dropping a hot dog in the grand canyon..

The campaign, no matter what I do.. bores me to death too. Maybe I'm growing out of video games.. though I love fast paced , realistic shooters..

Will Empire change my mind? I don't know, maybe if they focused on battles and removed the campaign. But that would piss off the thousands of people who love these campaigns..

But even then, the battles have just lost all meaning. Theres nothing satisfying anymore, about seeing a group of swordsmen run over a hill and crash into a unit of spearmen, then stand still abruptly, and start fighting. It's so goddamn monotonous.

This really sucks.. my favorite game series of all time.. my favorite subject.. history.. and it's boring. Utterly boring.

So I guess I've said it. Theres not one thing in the series that remotely interests me.. the only pleasure I take out of it, is reading the history surrounding the era, and then looking at the screens, of beautiful units our modders make.

after seeing countless of battles and victory after victory, meh, it must be you just got used to it now. The adrenaline is not there anymore like I did when I was still playing the tutorial.

Its just natural with games. Once you put in 20+ hours it just isnt fun anymore. I feel that way with all games like TW,CoD4,WiC and others. Mods honestly dont help unless they are drasticly different which unfortunetly dosnt happen with TW. Like the Half Life series is now my longest played series because of their unique mods. For example Age of Chivalry and D.I.P.R.I.P. are entirely unique to the original game and is why I still play them. But all TW mods and games are the basically the same experience except for a different era. This is why I think E:TW is going to be better because it is vastly different. Focusing on guns and naval combat is going to reinvigorate the series and let you put in even more hours into it until it eventually gets stale.
But anyway the point is unless something new and exciting comes then games just naturally get boring.

Why is that something special though? We all get bored of things eventually and we can't really blame the things we get bored of for it.
I feel the same way about TW, it simply gets boring once you've seen everything there is to see. You know how the battles work, you know how the campaign works, you know all the units, what they can do a.s.o. a.s.f.

I actually did a novel approach of playing the campaign with Ireland with the SS mod. I simply did nothing, I just horded my money and kept developing the two provinces that I had and I did that for well over 200 turns, turning Ireland into the richest medieval nation with its whooping 2 provinces. Now you're gonna say that sounds boring and I guess it is, but I only played it on the side and I entertained myself by studying the family tree and sending the king out for the occasional battle with rebels. Every time the pope wanted me to go on a crusade I just reluctantly agreed and just sent some general on a sightseeing tour giving me the nerdy opportunity to hire German mercenary knights and pretend they're the coolest thing since sliced bread and made them my king's new bodyguard. Which I thought makes sense, since the Irish have no good heavy cavalry and everybody loves shiny new mercenaries that will answer you with "Jawohl mein Herr!".

I have not touched TW for one year... After I bought EUIII... Sorry but TW is just too dumb comparing with EUIII... (I know a lot of members would want to cut my throat when they saw this)

Same here. Started playing M2TW again yesterday.

If they want audience,they have to start make interesting games.
Combine the strategical complicity of EU-series with
battles of TW series-even better ,yes much improved...

That's a sure way not to get audience. The EU series (along with HOI and Vicky) are pretty much a niche market that appeals only to a certain few.

I would suggest EU3 + expansions as well.

Its different than total war but a very fun game. If you are only interested in real time battles where you win every victory 10:1 against garbage AIs like on a TW game then you should avoid it.

You know sure the game is gone repetitive because you played it a lot , but i think theres another factor that everyone else hasn't thought of (well except rapax) and thats Imagination.

Ever Since shogun came out have you really thought about why you loved playing the game after the 1st week ? its because of imagination , i still remember how much joy i used to get seeing my 2d pixel's called samurai's fighting each other it was so much fun, it wasnt the fact that they were so well animated to be entertaining it was my imagination working in the back of my head.

You say you get bored of playing the game but you say you like looking at screen shots of mods ,(not even plaiyng them anymore,mind you), well thats because you stopped doing what made the game actually fun for you (and what makes it fun for me), imageing stuff up of how special every stupid little mundane action was in the game.

So if you can crank up that imagination of your'es and play the game again in a new light.

Indeed. The reason I love MTW1 so much is because in battle or in the campaign, there was much more imagination going on. In the battles, since the sprites didn't actually try to show everything happening, I would look at the battle going on and imagine what it really looks like. Whereas in M2TW, I have a very hard time imagining a different battle than the one depicted in mediocre detail.

That's one important thing.

And now I hate playing MTW1 because for some reason the loading screens pause for 60 seconds before the bar starts filling.. which renders it very hard to enjoy.
