Free upkeep in forts??

I'm playing as norway currently, and have 2 free upkeep slots in my forts(for dism. huscarls, huscarls, norse swordsmen)!

Didn't use forts much before, so I don't know..but is this a bug, or supposed to be that way? :hmmm:

If by Forts, you mean Castles (or Fortresses, whatever), then I believe that is one of the additions of Stainless Steel.

Unfortunately, in my Denmark campaign, my castle allegedly gives 1 free upkeep slot according to its "card", but it isn't actually doing so even though I have a Practice Range and peasant archers there.

Hahahahahaha..right, I didn't use castles before! No by forts, I mean forts! The ones you can build by generals!

I'm playing a late campaign and usung RR..

By the way PB..huscarls and dism. huscarls are not currently a free upkeep unit in castles, as I can't build them yet(I got them at the beginnig of the campaign)..must wait for the fortress upgrade!

So is it intentional not to have h.'s and dism. h.'s buildable in castles(in late campaign)? :hmmm:

If you are using RR, then Feudal units are free upkeep when in a castle. That would include Huscarls and Dismounted Huscarls for example, but not peasant archers.

Oh, I see. Thanks, Point Blank -- that's definitely the problem.

If you don't mind me asking, why are Huscarls and Dismounted Huscarls available at different "tiers" of Castle? (If I remember correctly, Huscarls are available from Castles, and Dismounted Huscarls from Fortresses.)

The poster refers to forts. As in forts created by your nobles when you venture an army about - same menu where you can pick watch towers.

Whether they give free upkeep or not I don't know, really. I suppose I'd have to try it! =)

Are your forts stone or wood variety?
I generally don't use them, ought to really, I am playing Norwegian too, I try it later and post the result.

That was a feature added in the Kingdoms: Brittania camapgin, didn't know they carried over to SS.

This can be specified in descr_strat.txt. You should see the line:

free_upkeep_forts 2

You can remove this to get rid of free upkeep units in forts, or alter the value to how many free upkeep slots you want in your forts.

I never noticed that before. Couple that in with the stone forts mod and you've got yourself one heck of an outpost.
