Scot with no name

A few turns into a Scottish campaign and I already have stumbled into two nameless characters



The boy on the bottom is just " , age 0". I also have a priest named " , ".

This is not a new problem, I had noticed it in vanilla when I used the Character Names Project mod, and it was also with Scotland back then. But I thought it might be fixed by now.

Has anyone else noticed this, and what could be the fix? I already checked with Names Verifier and everything seems perfect.

The CNP modder suggested that the problem might be with too-long names, or with compound first names. Scotland has a lot of both. Kwarezm also has compound first names, about 5 or 6, but then so do Turks, and Egypt has drools of them. Spain has one.

I have removed all Scottish compound first names except for Mael Coluim (the faction leader's name). I might even anglicize that to Malcolm. So far in my new campaign no nameless ones, but it might be only luck. I'll keep reporting about it.

Please anyone who hs seen nameless characters report it here so we might investigate the cause. Indicate what faction it was.

Oh and BTW I already ran Names verifier.

check the descr_names.txt file - see if you can spot any problems there.

I think it has to do with too many characters, i.e. if the name is too long plus the surname is too long they exceed a character limit and the result is no name.

150 turns into my scot campaign and no nameless ones have appeared. Could be luck, but I'm beginning to think I hit on something.

No, the problem is that surnames are handled differently by the engine then first names.
So, in descr_names.txt every split first name must have an underscore like "Leonardo Dono di Vaskez" and if u take that "Leonardo Dono" is the first name then it has to be written as "Leonardo_Dono" in descr_names.txt, and it cannot be written like the surname that doesn't need an underscore - "di Vaskez".
Atleast thats what i traced and tested on like 2 names and it was working.

It's all a descr_names.txt problem.

Edit: i haven't yet looked at kwarezm names

Ahhmmm... I had already tried that fix and still got nameless ones (i.e. fixing all the names from, for example, Mael Coluim to Mael_Coluim).

Well, first thing is that descr_start points the wrong names, second is those changes are not save compatible.

Yeah I know, I started a new campaign. My OP was after I had fixed the names.

220 turns and still no Nameless Ones.

i got a rebel general in Pamplona that have no name in my current campaign.

Rebels in pamplona would use spanish names I think. However I don't think El_Cid would cause a problem because it is short. I'll check to see if there are too long names in Spanish lists.

OK 255 turns into the campaign and having generated about 150 characters I got no Nameless Ones. Now I will try a different approach. I know for certain that 25-character long names work. (Longer names might work but I don't know it for certain).

I have brought back all the names I removed before, and now the criterion for removal was names longer than 11 characters and surnames longer that 14 characters. That way a name can never be longer than 25 characters no matter what combination. I have made the fix suggested by gracul for the compound first names. 57 turns into the campaign and having generated about 60 characters, all is well so far.
