Send each of your merchants to different types of trade resources and just leave them there. If you're lucky you'll eventually be earning 120+ for each merchant.
My spice merchant in Egypt is raking in 600+ every turn, maybe send a couple of merchants east.
It also helps to build a lot of mines and markets in your settlements![]()
I like pie.
Oh what I do is the same but, Not alot of merchants, but I also send an assasin to gaurd them from other merchants, and kill off any Merchants by them haha... THey are good for starter assasins too lol, thing is I can never get my merch up past like 50.. He dies from old age D:
Do you have a ton of units defending your cities? If you have cities that are about to start rioting all the time, forcing you to recruit tons and tons of defenders, you probably have spies in your towns. Recruit your own spies and put them in every town that is having problems, and build the town hall line of improvements to up your happiness. Jack the tax rate way up on any city that won't rebel if you do as well.
Or move your captial to a more centeral location.
But since this question was about finance and not public order, I'll answer it like this:
So, move your merchants far away from your capital onto recourses like ivory, slaves, spices, honey, silk, sugar, gold or anything else that works. But if you move them too far away, they might get a little corrupted, which isn't a huge deal. You can also build forts in some unpatched versions over recourses, and put 20 merchants into them. If you do this with ivory, you'll have plenty of cash in no time.
Once you build traders, the only reason why there's markets is to get assassins and spies and sometimes as a prerequisite for other buildings. Farms are much better for Northern and Eastern European factions. Markets are better for Southern European factions, the Byzantine Empire, and the Muslims.
Ports (higher better for warships however) and Merchant's Wharfs on the Mediterranean, especially the Aegean Sea and near Italy are great for money.
Remember, you can always check to see what a building will do to the stats of your settlement (the page where you see the health, order, religion, and cash flow or your settlement) when you add it to the build que. If you don't think it's helpful enough, don't build it. A general with good piety (or management in Britannia) also helps.
Hope I've been helpful!

ok thanks all but one other thing, how do you get merchants to make lots of money? does it help to train them in a place with merchants guild/ high level market?

Send them over to Egypt and such to bring in more money. The furthur away they are from your cities, the more money they will bring it. And I know its been said, but don't garrison a lot of units in cities if they are not needed.
If you build them with a high level town hall, then because of the legal-ness you get a extra 2 finance. And Merchant's guilds help too. But markets aren't really helpful for better merchants, but they let you make MORE merchants.
And I just remembered that it's BROTHELS that make sneaky people. Been playing Rome too much lately...

OK there are many ways to increase money, what i suggest are:1)Increase taxes to very high,2)Continue to capture new settlements,3)Use your merchants, there are good resources near Constantinople,Antioch and Timbuktu (thats the resources i use, probably there are more),4)The missions, you have to decide which missions are worthy,5)Try to take part in a crusade and capture the settlement,6)Go again with a diplomat to all other factions and propose your map information, they will give at least 170-200 each of them,7)Bully some other factions with a good diplomat,8)Also try to have the best relations with the pope because sometimes he gives you gifts of money
Watch my videoguides, they will help you all economically!

And to answer your latest question: Yes, but after you build the first level (the port!) the only REAL purpose of the shipwright + is to give you better war ships. Merchant wharfs are better for trade

Double check that you haven't got rebel or enemy armies stood on your roads as they can block trade. Maybe post a screenshot of your financial information so we can see what money you have going out/coming in?
