    Default RTW re-installing problems

I have installed RTW on a mobile hard-disk instead of the HD of my desktop, but I have encountered a problem with that.
Because of several virus problems, I have had to wipe the system and reinstall the OS. Now the original drive for the HD was J:\ but it is now registred as N:\.
The problem is that rtw still recognizes J as the drive it was installed on, but obviously I don't have J anymore. So now I can't reinstall RTW, or install the Alex expansion properly. That doesn't work as well, probably because the files are incomplete, since I can start the game but starting a game or campaign crashes the game.
Does anyone know any solution to any of these questions? Any kind of thanks shall be given.

After you reinstalled the OS, did you reinstall one of your old backup sets that had RTW on it?
The only way if you have RTW on there now and your OS recognizes it is to uninstall it.

All else fails do it manually, as in delete the the Activision or Creative Assmebly folder that it is in, Run a registry cleaner of ALL drives or run regedit and delete anything that is Rome, BI, Alexander, Creative Assembly and Activision, and then you should be able to start again.

    Good luck.

Well, the problem is that I don't have a J drive, but my pc says that rtw is installed on the J drive. So I can't uninstall it, how would a registry cleaner work and what does it do?

There is probably an entry in the Windows Registry for the game - this entry includes where it was installed to (I think).

Although if you've reinstalled the OS then the Windows Registry should have no trace of it.

Did you really reinstall or just repair?

I used the disk that is provided with the pc, I think it is called a boot cd. All I know is that all of the data I couldn't get off my pc, was lost. So I think that the whole HD was wiped clean and I could begin anew.

Was your external harddrive plugged in when you reinstalled Windows? If you did Windows issued it the drive letter when it detected it plugged in. how many pieces is harddrive partitioned into? Did you repartition it? How much other things do you have hooked up as in cd and dvd drives-internal and external, card readers, etc? They all get assigned drive letters. Look in Device Manager.

I don't know if the HD's were plugged in at the time of the reinstall. I haven't partitioned them, and I have only the two HD's plugged in.

One thing that hasn't changed since DOS is the way the OS assigns drive letters. Floppy drives are still A and B and are reserved whether you have them or not. C is your primary harddrive. D is your master cd/dvd reader. Everything else follows that including external drives. If you partitioned your harddrive before installing the OS, they get drive letters before the cd/dvd reader. To get it down ti the letter J or Letter N, that's why I ask the questions of which your answer says you really don't know how it's partition or what all the auxillaries that are plugged into it.

You can use Google to find free registry cleaners and just run its setup and do its job. If it finds registry keys and no Rome, it will ask you for permission to delete them. Say yes, okay or whatever format that program uses and let it do its job.
