Default Irony in Some Women's Support of Sarah Palin

I find it very ironic that many women, especially in the Bible Belt area of the U.S. in which I reside, who are self-proclaimed stay-at-home mothers empathize with Sarah Palin. Women who ironically are somwhat anti-feminists and are stereotypically devoutly conservative and religious believe that Sarah Palin somehow represents them even though her future job, if elected, will be far from the conservative "hockey mom" she claims to be. I would really like to hear your thoughts on this. If I am mistaken please let me know since this is a veiw which I have only heard locally.

I really don't think this is true. Sarah Palin is not exactly a feminist, but is (of course) pro women's rights. She is just not as outspoken as most other women's rights activists. This is more or less what many of the women in her support base want. Of course, Palin is a complete idiot, so none of that really matters in the end...

Lol agreed to the latter point. My point however is that she is somewhat a symbol of women's progress yet through her sort of family values style of thinking she has drawm the support of many conservatives who would otherwise prefer the traditional roles of females in american society. I agree that she does not market herself as a women's rights activist yet her mere involvment with the campaign makes her one regardless.

Feminism is the idea that men and women are equal; that there should be gender inequality. All women are feminists - I would hope so. And all men should be too. Dont confuse feminism with NOW or crazy liberal ones
Just because a women thinks that human life begins at conception and is pro life does not mean she is not a feminist. That woman basically thinks that it is murder - We dont have the right to choose to murder people do we?

Feminism has been given a bad rep with organizations like NOW

What I meant is that women's rights are not at the forefront of Palin's agenda.

Wtf?? Thats the biggest load of I've ever heard of. What kind of man refuses to treat his woman as such, a woman? No ing way do I treat a girl as equal to myself. You get what you earn, i say. Act like a lady and you get treated as such. Act like a and you get treated as such. Act like a female and by the unholy badass hammer of Thor you will get hit on as if you pissed off God Himself and your Sodom and Gomorrah's are showing (boobs). A real man doesn't lower himself to a girls standards.

    No she isn't.

She very much opposes female individual freedoms.

The problem is you are boxing people into a narrow, unyielding stereotype where because someone is in the bible belt they MUST believe every aspect of everything that you associate someone who lives there. It is very possible to agree with the positions of someone 60%, 70%, 80, 90% of the time and disagree with them on the rest.

I did not intend to present so much a stereotype as more of a commonly held opinion. I do not presume to say that all women in southern areas of the united states believe in the traditional roles of housewives I just simply find it ironic that I have observed many of the ones who do believe this way supporting Sarah Palin, who has the potential to accomplish something which is very progressive and anti-traditionalistic (Though i hope the first female VP is someone much more worthy of the postition).

I refere to feminism more in the sense of the advancement of women in a society which was, in its primordal phases, primarily masculine-dominated. Many women in America, however, actually believe in the Stepford style household where the woman stays home and the husband works. Though i do not intend to attack this view, i do intend to find fault with the women who incongruently attach there desire for tradition family values (not necessarily anti-feminism) with sarah Palin when she will, as VP, epitomize the andvanced, working, and independent female.

Yeah and if she messes up big time the whole world will laugh at them. LOL

Anyway, my point is its okay for women to be proud of a woman candidate. But be proud of the right woman ...

Jankren you make a good point. Is it right for women to support Palin even if she is not qualified simply because it will be a leap forward for women all over the world. I can understand how a women VP in one of the most prominent countries in the world would send a positive message to oppressed women in other nations yet I have serious doubts about her qualifications (her biggest political decision to make several years ago was what would be the town pagent's theme and now she is in our executive branch).

USA isnt the only important country in the world. Women have become the head leaders in many countries all over the world. Even Pakistan had one ...

No seriously Jankren. It has to be the US in this case. Nearly every country EXCEPT the US has had a female head of state at this point , Irregardless of the fact the US probably has better womens rights then most of them.

I think US is plenty ready for a female head of state but I think of part of the problem is that women in politics are often she-hawks. Men find that unattractive and most other women can't identify with that.

Sarah Palin is an interesting example because she's nothing like Hillary Clinton. During the debate with Joe Biden on CNN I found it most interesting that the meter at the bottom constantly showed female opinions hovering around the minus whenever Palin spoke, while male opinions hovered around the plus.

When Biden spoke it was the exact opposite. More female opinions hovered around the plus than male opinions did.

Are women less inclined to vote for another woman? I even heard one woman actually say that when asked on the street. "I wouldn't vote for a female anyway." Biologically and genetically, women are programmed to respond well to men with leadership qualities. Is this a factor even in something like elections? Might well be.
