    Default this is hilarious...

Okay, I was playing as HRE last night. I had started war on almost all fronts, thrashing Poland, Genoa, France and Denmark. Not surprisingly, I got excomunicated.

So I got my little diplomat to take a little trip down the italian peninsula and meet with the pope at rome. His demands for reconciliation were too high, so I just gifted him 1000 for like 10 turns, hoping i would get back into his good books and get reconciled that way.

    10 turns later, I was still excom'd

Looking at my Papal favour, I had about 7 crosses, so I was fairly well up there. Then I looked at my "Request for Crusade" option. I really didnt think this would work, but apparently I was eligible to request a crusade, even though I was excom'd (I'm guessing it was because of my high favour).

Now the first option for a settlement to crusade was no other than Frankfurt. I thought, "no way, there's no way I could call a crusade on myself". Nevertheless, I tried just for the sake of it, and honest to god, the Pope accepted. I got a general and a few men and they were ABLE TO JOIN THE CRUSADE!!!

So here I am, I've called a crusade on MYSELF, and I've got my own men ready to attack my own capital city.

Unfortunately, I loaded my autosave, because I didn't actually want to have a crusade on me, so I've no idea if my crusading army is actually able to attack my own city.

    Pretty hilarious i thought

    This is legitimate.

I almost thought out of the thousands of players, it would've happened to someone else. Try it out yourself, I'm sure it's reasonably easy to be excom'd and still have a high favour with the Pope.

Gobmech - the reason I loaded my autosave seemed pretty believable. I'm located in central Europe, and I didn't want to be at war with every catholic faction. Especially since I instigated the crusade, would've seemed like the most idiotic move in the history of TW.

Anyway, try it yourself everyone, other than that, I'll try it again and post pics.
I'm going to try it again when I get home (I'm at work atm), but what I'm really interested in is if I can get my own crusading army to attack Frankfurt.

Okay, well I'm heading home from work now, so I might have some time to do it tonight, we'll wait and see.

Just a side note, I'm playing SS6.1 if that's got anything to do with it...

This happened to me not long ago in one of my campaigns in SS 4.1. It seems you only get reconciled when the pope dies or when your faction leader dies. As my faction leader was still fairly young, I decided to try and buy my way out of excommunication by getting good relations with the Pope. However your papal favour seems to have nothing to do with reconciliation. I like you, had enough crosses to request a crusade on my own settlement. However I didn't go as far as joining it. Though I don't see any reason why I could not have if you manged it. I doubt it would be possible to siege your own city though.

I don't believe I have the save for it now either. But if people are skeptical want to try it out, it can't be too hard. Just get excommunicated then use the money cheat and gift a load of cash to the Pope. Then when you have enough Papal favour, try requesting a crusade.

However I notice you're playing SS 6.1 and I'm playing SS 4.1. Perhaps its a Stainless Steel bug and won't occur in vanilla?

EDIT: I've just tried it with Milan and was able to call a crusade on myself. However, when I tried to join I got the message "Excommunicated character cannot join the crusade". Here's the pics:

    Weird
You actually should try to call a crusade on your city, and than play on and see how long it takes to have some armies marching towards your city

I was able to do the same thing last night, but the army I was going to use to crusade my own city won't join the crusade. Basically exactly the same thing that happened to Robbo, have a look at his photos as proof that this can actually happen.

Angrychris - you are able request a crusade, regardless of your status as a Christian kingdom, just as long as your favour is high enough. Once again, this may just be a SS glitch, I haven't tried on vanilla though
