    More like the other way around; everyone in Western Europe is bound to have some Frankish blood, but if you then claim the Franks are your ancestors you could just as well claim the Romans were.

    Just because the franks gradually conquered western Europe, doesn't make them more numerous - the franks themselves were a single ethnic entitiy, that ruled the empire. Most of the non-frankish peasant populace [most common ancestors] had no chance to marry franks, which means that even though they had an empire, they didn't necessarily influence the gene pool of the region.

    The same to a million times larger extent can be said for "Romans" - the ethnic group was called Latins, and they only inhabited a part of central Italy. Even most of the emperors didn't have a trace of Latin blood, let alone some peasants in Gaul, Germania, Britannia, etc.
