    Default Problems modding RTR

    I am trying to mod RTR. Using the unused romans_brutii faction slot, I am trying to give them just the province of Hibernia. Originally when I tried to load a new campaign it would CTD when I pressed start new campaign with romans_brutii. That error was caused by the named character having a name not under romans_brutii, but that has now been fixed. Now when the loading bar reaches the end the game CTD> Any ideas why?

    This is the code I edited in desc_strat.txt, cut and pasted from the slave faction section:

    Did you remember to remove the spawned_on_event tag for romano_british in descr_sm_factions.txt?

    Yes, I guess that means I did forget. This is my first attempt at modding RTR, (I previously have modded vanilla), is there anything else extra I should have done?

    A second attempt at modding RTR:

    I have done similar to before, using the romans_brutii slot, only I have moved the already existing character Berdic outside of the Hibernian settlement and have replaced it with a small garrison. When I load the campaign as the Brutii, it loads without CTDing but gives me the faction defeated message. The camera is targeted on Hibernia, but toggle_fow shows that it is still rebel, with approx 200 troops in the setllement, although I cannot select it to see. Any ideas what I am doing wrong?

    I see my problem. I had not labelled my general as a family member, and so the AI believes that I have none, and so ends the game.

    Yes, and you should mark him as leader, as well.

    Have done, but thanks.

    You guys at RTR make adding units to the mod very difficult! I had to enable one of the buildings used only by the slave factions and add the units to that.
    Although this may disappoint some people, I am indeed alive, I just went inactive for three years.

    Besides the fact that the whole approach seems weird, there are no "buildings used only by the slave factions" in vanilla rtr 6/rtrpe much as I remember.

    The original barracks are used only by the Slave faction.

    Ive run into another brick wall. I have tried to enable various units for use with the romans_brutii faction, have added access rights to the export_desc_units, but when I try to laod them into a custom battle, the game CTD's with the message 'Generic Error. The file RTRPE/data/RTR?models_unit/textures/necklace.bmp is missing.' Several variants also occur with different textures missing. It is clear that I havent done something I needed to when adding the units to the romans_brutii faction; any ideas what?

    Ah, that`s what you meant. Well, it is of the essence of rtr that each faction recruits its units from its own barracks so as to represent the time needed to colonize/convert a province. Otherwise the whole purpose of the aor system disappears. The rebels don`t actually use those barracks to recruit their troops. Theirs are recruited from the core government buildings ensuring they are always able to recruit units. If you make those so called slave barracks(which were not actually used in rtr) available to other factions then each faction will have two sets of barracks.

    Unless you`ve done it, but forgot to mention, then it seems you have not made a new set of textures and sprites entries for those units in DMB(descr_model_battle). The textures and sprites are designated via faction ownership so you need to add a corresponding line to each faction that has access to that unit in EDU. The name of the used DMB entry is what you have in EDU for the soldier line.

    When you get such error messages, the easiest way around is to make a copy of the unit's texture, named it yxz.bmp and the game will stop complaining.

    With some other troop choices that I enabled, rather than returning that error they are using vanilla skins and models. Do I need to edit a text file which tells the game where to find each model or texture, and if so which one?

    That was a disasterous first attempt at modding RTR...

    Sorry to bug you all again, but I have rebuilt my hard drive, and reinstalled RTW + RTR etc. Whe nI try to load my mod I get an error message saying 'Generic Error: Unable to find skeleton 'fs_standard_bearer_verybig'

    Any ideas why and/or how to fix it?

    Nope. I have merely created a new faction based upon romans_brutii, and have reassigned textures of the relevant units. Do I need to do anything about models to make them usable by the Brutii?

    If you are modding straight in the RTR folder, which does contain the new animations/skeletons, then no, you shouldn't be needing anything else, at least not anything that would give you a missing skeleton error. This might sound silly, but you have installed RTR properly and directed your shortcut to the proper folder, right?

    (Out of ideas for now)

    Yes, I have. Ive included the files I have edited in a folder called TB that sits in the RTRPE folder, in case I have done something wrong or missed something out. Thanks for trying.
