Default Berdiche axemen and 2 handed fix

I just brought my medieval kingdoms up to date with the 1.05 patch. I am wondering if there is still a problem with the 2 handed swordsmen and halberds. My berdiche axemen seem to suffer excessive casualties without inflicting much damage themselves. Not sure yet if there is a problem or if I am misusing them.

If there is a fix necessary, can someone link or point me in the right direction.

Misuse. Don't shove them in the overly intense combat situations. You could charge, and once the effect is gone withdraw or charge from the flanks of an engaged enemy. See, 2-handed units suffer because they have a slow animation, and if the unit attacking them goes and has a jab they have to reset the whole animation, meaning they don't tend to get much hits. Though i'm sure 2-handed axemen are more bugged than 2-handed swordsmen.

    Thanks Alex.

I was surprised at the poor performance of the Berdiche Axemen. Sounds like you are recommending they should be used like cavalry. Charge, retreat and charge again. Although it is a difficult task with infantry to perform repeated charges as retreating is very hard to do with engaged infantry. Cavalry can pull off the tactic due to their speed. Infantry tends to get massacred if they retreat while closely engaged.

So was the 2 handed bug actually fixed by 1.05? I remember all sorts of fixes from substituting new models to adjusting formation spacing to produce decent results for those troops. If 1.05 didn't actually fix the bug, I may experiment with some of the alternate solutions.

So do you know if the bug was actually fixed?

I think charging repeatedly is awkward, cavalry is goood for that. I mean, just being a powerful infantry shock force. I mean like, attacking on the enemy army's right flank because their infantry will already be engaged, and soldiers mount their shields on their left arm. Also, because their forces are more spread and your two-handers concentrated, it means they won't be able to affect the animation so much so their flank will get turned. From there the rout starts.

I think the two-handed bug was worked upon but i'm not sure what was done to actually fix it.

There are 2 ways you can make the Berdiche axemen quicker.
    1. In battlemodels.db find the unit, at the bottom of its entry you will find the animation,
    Code:

    11 MTW2_2H_Axe
    Change it to,
    Code:
    16 MTW2_Fast_2H_Axe
Remember to change any armour upgrade models, (ug1, ug2 etc.)

    2. In EDU, go to the stat_pri and change the 'Min delay between attacks' EG.
    Code:
    stat_pri 16, 9, no, 0, 0, melee, melee_blade, slashing, axe, 25, 1.33
I think the number should always be an odd one, although I am not certain on this.
    Code:
    stat_pri 16, 9, no, 0, 0, melee, melee_blade, slashing, axe, 1, 1.33
Either step 1 or 2 should make a difference, the 2 combined should make a considerable one.

    Thanks Eothese...

I have made the change in the EDU and will test shortly.

I used the unpack all tool in the tools folder to unpack the battlemodels but it didn't unpack them....

Is there a separate unpacker tool specifically needed for the battlemodelsdb ??? If so, can someone point me in the right direction. I have done multiple searches without results.
BTW, I am not using Vista.

If all the other files unpacked OK, I don't see why the battlemodels didn't. You can always download the formated version of the file, in fact I would recommend it as its much easier to edit and understand.
    Here's one version.

Ok, thanks Eothese! I was able to get into battlesdb and make the axemen change. The unit is performing much better.
