I've paid extra attention now at musketry at different ranges and now I'm sure: In the mod a volley fired at maximum range causes more casualties than a low range volley!
Enemy pikemen were surrounded by 2 companies of my musketeers. The pikemen were moving towards one of my companies. That company fired at them at extremely low range, only 4 or 5 of the pikemen went down. However, the other company of musketeers fired at nearly maximum range and their volley made 10 or so pikemen fall.
It wasn't just one volley. the pikemen turned around and tried to attack the other company after some time so I had the opportunity to repeat the action.
So I've experienced this with several volleys, not just one exception. However, I'm not sure if it was like that in all of my battles, as I haven't compared casualties depending on range as carefully before. But close range fire always seemed to be strikingly ineffective right from the start.
Have you experienced that as well? If so I really think this should be fixed.
