I just try to play with well-balanced armies that only have 1-2 elite units and are led by a named character. Beyond that, nothing specific.

There are some nice house rules about playing historically as Rome included in your installation.
I find those rules too restricting myself. Like Quinn, I prefer a mixed army with a relatively small number of elite units (normally 2-4 for me) led by a general. I also like to set decade long conquest and consolidation goals and limit my expansion to that. It does a nice job of slowing down the game so that I don't get bored from running ragged over the AI while keeping the pace fast enough that I don't get bored from a lack of action.
mine
- never repeat history
- never asking for peace or accepting one
- never stop fighting an enemy until he's completely annihilated
- never trust any alliance; backstab your allies before they backstab you!
- follow what Sun Tzu said: attack him where he is unprepared, appear where you are not expected. never fight a battle fairly!

all armies must be led be a captain, all named characters must go govern a city. if the named character is has a mentally negative trait you must kill him in battle.
sieges are not allowed. all settlements must be captured using siege equipment.
makes game much harder. the sieging rule is really annoying because sieges are the worst part of the game to me IMO.
