Default Pirates what a clever idea !!!!

Buy Rome total war and play on very hard settings and have your campaigns constantly ruined by pirate attacks
Yes folks you can't actually fight them, you have to auto resolve and you almost always LOOSE
Forget trying to be skillful and learn how to play YOU WILL LOOSE BATTLES
What an advancement to your gameplay experience buy a game called Rome and end up constantly loosing to Pirates

Even better do what I did go and buy a new expensive gaming computer, get lumbered with Vista and be totally unable to mod anymore, download mods or take more than 1 screenshot without relogging

And don't get me started on traits, take a village, upgrade it to a small town and get hit with the pooor farmer trait when you can't buy farms at that stage or the new advancement to 1.5 where you cant afford to buy rebels anymore cos they are ludicrously expensive now

Sorry everybody just had to get that off my chest before I punch my computer in a fit of rage (again)

Please feel free to rant away or just add comments it will make you feel better

Seriously, I hate Vista with their new counter-intuitive organization style.

IMO, Vista can go in the bin when it comes to gaming and modding. As for your other problems, just use the auto_win cheat if you are that pissed off about the pirates. I can understand how you feel, so I won't rant and rave back at you

Oh god, don't get me started on Vista. I just bought an awesome gaming computer and had to reinstall 4 times (1st was in program files, 2nd the patch 'couldn't locate RTW.exe', 3rd I had a corrupt install (unistaller left behind some registry keys and the installer stopped halfway) and the 4th is the good one) , and find out the tilde button for Romeshell doesn't work. Remind me why I bought a new computer again?

... So ... am I the only who who doesn't seem to have any problems with Vista? I mean, I had no problems installing anything, I can mod the files any time I want, had no problem downloading EB (or playing it!) ... Alt-Tabbing back and forth to take pics is annoying, but on the recommendation of another poster, I just got the freeware version of Fraps for that .... Oh, and the tilde works ....

    On-Topic:
Yes folks you can't actually fight them, you have to auto resolve and you almost always LOOSE
Well, if you engage with equal or superior numbers, and check to make sure your stats are superior (not too difficult, unless you're playing as a Barbarian faction), and aren't playing on the harder ... Campaign mode, I think ... I recall reading that increasing the Campaign difficulty gives advantages to the AI during Auto-Calc battles. And, to be honest, I've never really had issues with pirates. They've popped (seemingly) out of nowhere to sink one of my minor armies (but with a good general) when it was trying to sail back from Sardinia (reloaded, toggle_fow, it was there alright), but that's about it ... and seeing as I was the Germans and only using a single "Boats" unit, not even a "Large Boats," I suppose I rather deserved it.

On Vista: My brother works for MicroSoft, testing OS's like Vista. He's taken me to the company store about a half-dozen times (about once a year). The last three times, I have had the opportunity to buy Vista at an 80% discount; but after quizzing my brother, I always decide to get another copy of XP instead. The last time I worked him over, he said that Vista should be ready for prime time in about a year (after the next service pack comes out). He advised not to get it until both of the following conditions were met: A.) I need a HW upgrade; and B.) The service pack for Vista has been released.

    Thanks, very useful information.

To be fair, Vista is useful and an inprovement over XP...

IF YOU ARE EITHER OVER 70 OR HAVE SEVERE LEARNING DISABILITIES!!

It is way too dumbed down, and prevents the user from using some of the most basic features as they are classed as 'advanced features'. My dad used to build and set up PC's and networks for a massive law firm for a living. Aparently his old company are hiring loads more technitians to rebuild their network, as the fools decided to upgrade to Vista

To be fair though, the same happened to XP when it was new. Until Service Pack 2 came out, which is now required for almost anything, it was a liability.
Although this may disappoint some people, I am indeed alive, I just went inactive for three years.

Vista SP1 is out, thought to run Vista these requirements should be meet as a minimum honestly

    AMD Athlon X2 4000/Intel PentiumD 820/920
    2gb DDR400/DDR2 667
    Geforce 7600GT/X1600XT

Those are the minimum specs id say for effectivly using vista and all of its features for 90% of users.

Service pack one is out, and Vista is vastly improved. As a long term users I can personally assure you if you get Vista and promptly install SP1 and any other updates you will be fine. You can also disable the protection features of Vista, its in the advanced control area of Vista. Also Vista is less likly to be hacked or infected than XP as the new way programs talk to the kernal prohibits many traditional ways of hacks, cracks, or virsus from working on vista. Also you are less likly to get a BSOD on vista. Most people that have vista either A have never used it, or B have no idea what they are doing in an OS.

The symptoms are very similar to 2001 when XP came out and hundreds of thousands of users refused to leave 98.

Not true at all, XP SP0 was a liability, SP1 included many secruity fixes, as a matter of fact SP2 was based on Vista, not sure how close you follow Windows devlopment, but Vista was delayed to push SP2 out, but the secruity center was pulled from Vista directly belive it or not. Also all the old toys are there to play with, go to the admistration tools in the control panel, and renable all your old toys.

Vista is still Nt based, its NT Kernal 6.0, Vista Home Basic and Home Premium don't contain the nice little toys granted but Vista Bussiness, Enterprise and Ultimate do.

One check: are you confusing SP2 with SP3? I knew SP3 was based on Vista and that they delayed the release of vista to release SP3 instead, but I havent noticed any difference between SP2 and SP3. My main problem with Vista is some incompatibility with certain programs and games, and the restrictive way they have locked out certain features.

Everyone has his own opinion though.

actully SP3 was pushed back for Vista, and is just a hotfix collection, Vista was shelved for 6 months while they broght many of the features from the then current vista builds into XP actully

    Ah right, thanks.

As I said before, different people have had different experiences with vista. If it works well for you, good. If it doesn't, wait for the new service pack like me.

I suppose it just depends on your system configuration and software. After a week of McAfee and Vista feuding on my mates PC I decided against Vista.
