Well what I spent and what it cost me are two differant things. I spent about £800 (inc tax and delivery) on this
CPU: Core 2 E6400 with Artic Cooler Freezer Pro 7
Motherboard: Gigabyte P965 DS3
Ram :1 gig DDR800 Crucial Memory
Hard Drive: 320gig Seagate Barracuda SATAII
Video Card: X1900 XT 512MB with Artic Accellero X2
PSU: Seagate 600 Watt PSU
Opitcal Drives: Pinoer: 18x DVD RW, 16x LG DVD-RW
Extras: Floppy Drive, Front Card Reader, Microsoft Multimedia Keyboard
However I used a clever tax trick which helped me reduce the cost of the PC. In the UK we have a sales tax called VAT (value added tax) set 17.5% on just about everything, buying my part through work I was able to get my company to claim the VAT back.
I then brought the computer from my employer the cost of which was taken off my gross salary, which mean that month a paid less income tax and national insurance (another type of tax) then I would normally do.
I then sold my old computer on e-bay for about £200, which meant when you took the VAT off, money saved in tax and the e-bay sale I got the above for £300.
That was Sept 2006, DDR2 back then was big money (hence why I only had 1Gb of ram), Core 2 Duo's were brand new very expensive the CPU alone cost me over £200.
What motherboard did you get? The E7200 is a great overclocker, a good motherboard like the Biostar TPower or the Asus p5Q Deluex along with a decent HSF should yield spectacular results.

I exactly got that because it was part of the combo. I plan to overclock my 2.5 Ghz CPU to 3.0Ghz.
Im sure your PC is at least 2 years old because today Intel E8400 is only $170.

Is 2GB RAM actually enough to play the latest games?

Around $1100 on the tower a year ago.
8600 GTS
2GB RAM, 800mhz (very fast timings)
680i chipset motherboard
320GB hard drive @ 7200rpm
600W modular power supply
E6420 Core 2 Duo
Some card-reader thing that my motherboard totally does not have spots for.
This case.
And like 15 bucks on assorted blue light, Arctic Silver, SATA cable, etc.
Come to think of it, I really need to get that card-reader hooked up (at least see if I can get the SD reader up). And replace that one DVD drive that doesn't work. And keep the wires clean. And try to figure out how to get that 3-pin connector for the power indication light to work with the 2-pin male connection.
First computer I built by myself, it's not as much of a wreck as it sounds like. It runs solid and cool, not bad for a first try. Also, I don't think it's bottlenecked by anything significant. Video card could be better, but bought it around June '07, so grain of salt.
Edit: By the way, 2GB and the 8600 on XP are plenty fine for almost any game. I mostly play older games, but it can absolutely tear through M2TW. I was looking for bang for the buck, and it delivers. It can run Crysis decently.

My temporary fix computer was quite cheap, but not even close to top of the line:
$70 Athlon 64X2 5200+
$100 Asus whatever number (Edit: M3N78 Pro) AM2/AM2+ motherboard
$40 2gb some such named RAM
Maybe $100 for a Radeon 3650 1GB
$50 for a SATA DVD Burner
I kept my current case (to be replaced by an Antec 900 probably next week), PSU that I got for free from somewhere (Antec 500w), and HDDs (oldish 250gb and 500gb).
I just needed to replace my old AGP motherboard, 3000+ chip, memory, etc, and the totally awesome, but AGP, Radeon X850 I was using. It was just getting old and was starting to kinda crap out (except for the gfx card...thater was rock solid, and I kinda miss it already). Everything but the motherboard and I imagine the burner will be upgraded probably by the end of January to top of the line type
. I couldn't do that at the time simply because I was buying two of everything, so....you know.....

Hmm, it seems more people are posting in the Basement than often.
My rig costed about $1480, but the rebates should knock it down to $1350.
8800 GTS 512
MSI 680i
Windows XP x64 Pro
Intel E8400
4 GB DDR2 RAM
500 GB Hard Drive

Very good bang for the buck at the time.
Wow, everyone seems to have relatively deep pocket, eh?

As a norm I think that everybody spends around $1200 for a new system.
As for answering your question, I can't I have not yet built a system for myself, I have relied on pre-built.I am going to build a new system for Empire, and will probably spend around 800 on parts, since I have some I can reuse, mainly memory and hard drives.
