A question I have is are the settlements meant to be so unhappy, it seems to be very difficult to stop the red faces and not enough affordable buildings to make a difference.

They aren't unhappy, they just don't like you!

Yes I'm being serious...If you find that the population of a settlement is showing angry red faces you need to take the necessary steps to swing support back in your favour. Calling for a draft will move support away from you, whereas producing propaghanda and spreading it throughout the settlement will bring support back towards you.

There'll be more support buildings in the future.

So other than the printing building and the coffee/house/pub, are there any other buildings?

Will the unhappiness reduce over time taking into account my winning personality?

Check the settlement window to find out what is causing the civil disorder. It could be a lack of support, it could be squalour, it could be the lack of a governor, it could be devastation.

Once you know what's causing the unrest you can build buildings that fix the problem. Right click the building to find out what it'll help counter.
