Rome Vanilla is the game straight out of the box, it's not a mod. If you haven't played the mods at all then it's good fun. And this makes the mods even better by comparison afterward, because you wonder how on earth you were content with the Vanilla units and campaign map.
Oh, thanks. Any suggestions on any mods? I want something realistic and better skins too.

Don't disregard Roma Surrectum, it's faster and the legion system is cool. It's not quite as steeped in history as EB (which might be a good thing) but it's still an awesome mod.
And here's the link, enjoy!

EB is the most historical as they say, RTR being the most realistic one then.
RS seems to be fun (i'm not such a fan of it)
but for a wonderfull and hard Roman campaign, i advise SPQR TW with garrisson script and houserules
nothing better, believe me!!!
look for the mods in the mod forum

RTR is probably the best mod out there
EB overhelms you with history, it's hard to identify anything due to the super-long names that usually tell you nothing. Description is barely helpful, it's usually an epic wall-text of China with technical description melding with history. If you're crazy about history, go for it. If you're not, that mod will just annoy you.
I'd recommend RTR, Rome Total Realism.
Every time you , god kills another kitten.
If you're gonna hire Machete to kill the bad guy, you better make damn sure the bad guy isn't YOU!
'I understand, and I take the light into my soul. I will become the spear of Khaine. Lightning flashes, blood falls, death pierces the darkness.' , Dhrykna.
EB has the english names right beside the long native ones... ie: Pezhataroi (Medium Phalanx). Not to difficult to understand, imo.
EB download is here: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=157181
RTR is here: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=105336 This is RTRPE but I would also recommend Extended Realism (ExRM). This can be found here: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=179715 For ExRM, try using the installer, its way easier and can be found near the bottom of the first post (read the entire thing). Or you can manually install it.
I would also make a recommendation for XGM, my favourite mod to date: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=127
I agree XGM is a fantastic mod, but if you like vikings I highly advice you to download Viking Invasion 2.

To answer the main question of this thread, Rome Vanilla offers a perfect starting set of campaigns and battles. It is very new-user friendly, and the roman campaigns are fairly easy to give you a good starting point. A historically bad set of units and nations give a wide variety of gameplay styles. Faction colours for each unit makes it easy to identify which units are yours and which are the AI's. Senate missions offer a guideline and a bit of variety to gameplay. However it can get a bit samey, at that point download a mod, I recommend Rome Total Realism as it does not alter gameplay too much, but is slightly more challanging without being ridiculously hard like SPQR, and is historically accurate without overloading you with history like EB (in my opinion).
Although this may disappoint some people, I am indeed alive, I just went inactive for three years.
agreed RTR is good, and does not take a history major to play
