If I can recall things correctly, Tolkien did not want his dwarves portrayed with hammers, in order to distinguish them from other dwarves. Dwarves should fight with swords, axes, mattocks, pikes and halberds (what about maces? can't remember).

The "Fun > Realism" part makes it a bit confusing, as it suggests that hammers should be included, for the fun of it.

Well, dwarves are famous for their forging skill, so I suppose they have plenty of hammers, since miners were included I guess hammer wielding dwarves could be included like some sort of militia unit.

As far as I know, dwarves used hammers for smithing, not war. I don't think giving them hammers really adds to the gameplay.

The unit wielding pickaxes are miners, not warriors. Think of them as more powerful peasants.

I'm very happy with your feedback KK. I would just emphesize that the unique dwarven ballista needs to be considerably more powerful against troops than typical artillery from M2TW (like serpentine) as it should provide enough damage to the enemy. It would be good to make it exclusively usefull against troops and not buildings. It's damage should be probably dealt trough it's superior accuracy and perhaps rate of firing. A good model for it would be the Roman caridge ballistae from BI.

With such specialized siege weapon they would be able to do some real damage (unlike typicial siege equipment of M2TW) from a superb range. Greater than any other faction. However to function one should utterly keep enemies at some range. This would give them excelent battle control as it would force almost any enemy to come to them or face powerful ballista fire. It would force the enemy to get close enough for thier infantry (and other units) to assault them.

This would give them a VERY unique playing style, and most imprtantly it would make the need for cavalry go away. The advantages of cavalry would be replaced by superb siege.

The roles of cavalry are the following:
    1) Outmanouvering the enemy
    2) Pursuit of fleeing enemy
    3) Flanking the enemy and charging home

The advantages of powerful anti-troop ballistae:
    1) Utterly outranging the enemy giving you superior manueverability and battle control
    2) Ability to shoot fleeing enemies as they retreat (cavalry is superior a bit here)
    3) Ability to fight the enemy always fairly weakened by its approach under artillery fire comapred to a charge of cavalry.

I conclude that this type of siege equpiment can cover most of areas that cavalry would fill but also adding some of it's own flavour giving for a very unique gameplay, one unseen so far in any TW game I know.

Concerning hammers, they would be nice but if Tolkien didn't mention them then it's better they are not there. I am however almost completely sure (from my own experience and disscussions on the forum) that Tolkien mentioned dwarves using bows.

A unit of short range but powerful dwarven bowmen (metallic bows maybe, it would fit dwarves) could easily replace Dale archers, and would be even better lorewise.

I just realized i gave quite a long "study". Sorry if there's too much for reading but I would believe this propositions make some good sense and would much appreciete if the team would consider them.
I am slightly obsessed with longbows

It sure does, by adding to the unit variety, which wouldn't let you get to the point where you're tired of looking at just the same dwarves over and over again.

    Very well done.

I agree, a unit of Ironbow Archers would be very useful.
