    Default Gurkhas' court victory

Just to lighten up the atmosphere in the pit I thought that I would post this thread about the Gurkhas winning the right to live in the UK if they served before 1997. It made me smile when I read the article about it because I believe that they justly deserve to live within the UK.

For those of you who dont know what/who the Gurkhas are then read this
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gurkhas

    Here is the article
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7644702.stm

Does anyone here disagree with the courts ruling or do you think that it is a good thing like I do?

Good news. The original decision was so crass. How to alienate people over a really trivial subject. Crass, I tell you, crass. The bloke who came up with the original limits really should resign and then walk through Nepal naked as an act of penance. Have I mentioned that it was crass?

Good news! I hope this ruling will help heal any damage that was caused by the first ruling.

Excellent news, finally the government does something right. Why it had to go this far is beyond me, I can't see how they did'nt realise that granting these deserving men, who've served this country faithfully, the right to live here, is actually a universally popular decision in Britain. It was a no brainer really.

There's a lot of hoo ha over immigration/asylum at the moment, but everybody would agree that out of all people, the Gurkha's more than earned the right to settle here and the government refused them. (pre 97) A baffling decision at the time, glad it's been rectified. Not before time.

I totaly believe they should come and settle in our country. They have fought for generations for this countries and let me make it quite clear that i feel ashamed to be british the way our nation is reviewing their plea...

The acceptants as migrants is the least we could do for these people who have laid down there lives for us and there claim seems so much more understandable then some guy who can't speak english and wants money for nothing (sterotypical i know but im trying to prove a point.)

Glad that they won the right to enter the country however i feel that is not enough, they should really be given something to accknowledge the role they played in defending queen and country.

Well I feel as though all of our soldiers deserve something extra rather than shoddy equipment, poor pay (£16000pa, a policeman gets more), appauling living conditions and small life insurance pay outs. How we could have let our armed forces be so neglected is beyond me, no wonder many servicemen and women are leaving in droves

Yes exactly but thats what you get from a corrupt country that has lost its morals and stance on life.

Britain used to be a proud nation and now look they have been stabbed in the back by liberal socialists and slimy politicians who's main interest is for your mark on there piece of paper.

God i really hope i could be a politician one day so i can change this trend.. we have gone to far..

How come Britain still have Nepalese soldiers when Nepal is no longer part of Britain?

Its more like a tradition for the British army to recruit Nepalese soldiers. That Wiki article should have the answer

As Farnan pointed out, it never was. The soldiers impressed the Brits so much that they were offered (originally as mercenaries, probably) to form part of the army but their skills and abilities have become so prized that Britain regularly recruits from Nepal to keep the regiment going. Very highly thought of indeed.

The bleeding Romans allowed soldiers who served in their Army to become citizens. We were 2,000 years behind!

Exactly, but hopfully not for long

These guys fought for us battle after battle, they deserve our respect, the least we can do is make them citizens of the country they were willing to lay down their lives for.

Totally agree. How they could possibly not automatically have this right is beyond me.

Fantastic news, nobody deserves our respect and good treatment more than the Ghurkas, calling them good soldiers does not even begin to describe the level of dedication and professionalism they display, deployed or on the home front. Truly amazing men, and it is disgusting that this farce was tolerated for as long as it was.

It's not all over, all of those who served before 97 still don't have the right to serve.

They've won their test case. The men who were in court were the Gurkha's who left prior to 1997. Those were the men who just got the result. Men serving after this date were already allowed to settle here by law.

The 1997 deadline is because before this date, the Gurkha depot/home base was Hong Kong, they were never based in the UK. Obviously this changed with the handover of HK to China.

Ah I didn't read the article in the OP, I rad the original when it was first put on the site, so I failed to see this applied to all Ghurkas, I thought it was only those handful who contested, butit seems all can nowstay.
