Default Unit Managment question, The charge

    Hey guys,

I have a question regarding the charge. What I usually do, is micro manage my unit, by selecting one unit at a time and charge into a ennemy unit. If i have a line of 10 units, then I have to take 20-30 seconds to do a complete charge, and I find it takes to much time.

Lets say you have a line of 10 infantry unit facing another line of 10 ennemy infantry unit. Is there a way to make a fast CLEAN charge into the ennemy line without having to click on each single unit ?

how do you guys usually manage that ?

    Huge thanks guys

    have a great one today

Hmmm, I don't think there actually is a combination of keys that allows you to do that, but I think they closest you'll get, is by selecting that whole line of your units, then alt+double right click behind the enemy. This will make them run towards the enemy in the same position in the line that they were in when they were standing. Then, while they are running, you can select each one and tell them to attack each enemy unit. That way, though it still takes time, at least your soldiers are already moving somewhere while you are designating their attacks.

    hey Xavier

funny you mention that, that is exactly what I do. Its just when you take the 12-20 seconds to do that, you still can't control your cavalry, and when you have cavalry on both your flanks sometimes u can run out of time, I just tough maybe there was a way to have faster control of your main line

    thx for the reply

that's also what i do. and if you were a roman army with your infantry throwing pilla, i would also order them to halt when they're close enough to the enemy so they can through their pilla at will.

Yeah I know what you mean. And speed is essential in this game, or more specifically, timing is essential, and speed is needed to get the timing right.

    Moved to Battle Planning.

Are you talking about Single Player (SP) campaign? Just hit pause (that is what it is there for).

Or are you saying that the 20-30 seconds of real time (while the game is on pause) is too much time out of your life?

To answer your original question: I do what Xavier suggests, EXCEPT I use CONTROL-<double-right-mouse-click> . If you use ALT instead of CNTL, your units will use their secondary weapons. Sometimes that is what you want; often it is not. (EDIT: Oops, ALT-click will use secondary when ordering a single unit to attack. I am not sure if ALT-click for a group move will force secondary weapons.)

Well, no matter if you're playing SP or MP, I think the most important thing is not your micromanaging but the impact of the first blow. Attacking on full front isn't the smartest thing, unless you're sure to win the battle. I think you should decide on which point of his line to attack the enemy and than order your units to mainly engage there. In this case it doesn't matter if every unit of yours attacks the right enemy unit as long as the whole attack goes into the right direction with full power.

Yes, you can do it simultaneously by using the pause button.

Sorry dude, but to me this is consider cheating. I play Single campaign(currently playing Rise of Persia MOD as sparta), always at VH/VH ...

When I play RTW, I love to put myself in difficult situation, and if theres no way to make a clean charge with all my line in 2-3 clicks, well so be it, ill deal with it. but ill never pause the game, or reload saved games because ive lost a battle etc ...

    Thanks for the suggestion tough

You guys are awesome to have reply to my question

You coulden't be more right !!!

Ive been playing Total War serie since RTW release. from rome to medieval 2, ive been mostly doing that. exploting a section of the line while some other section would be used as defending a part or flank of my line.

THE reason im asking the question, is because of this MOD im playing ... Rise of Persia, this MOD takes you back at 550 BC. Im playing Sparta, ive conquered Athenia and Terra. Cavalry and Archers are .. very weak and the real power comes from your infantry, I still use my "hammer/anvil" tactic to envelop the ennemi. The charge really .. really gives you a start advantage that will give you a HUGE advantages eventually on the field. With a line of 10-12 infantry + reserve, by the time ive charged half my units, the ennemi will charge some of my units I diden't have time to micro manage yet.

BTW ... this mod is really a good change before empire comes out

This is a waste of time! Simply pause the battle and order charge to your units and return to the action and this is good micromanage.

There is a variety of ways, my friend. You can click and drag to select the desired units. If your desired units are all the same, then double click one and u will select them all. If u still want to individually select your units, but still want them to charge at the same time, then u can always pause (hot key P) and give each unit their orders and still have them act simultaneously. Hope this helps!
