    Default Ironies in PC...

There have been some ironic moves in an effort to remove all hints of offending anyone in America, here are some of them:

Cartoon Network took off Speedy Gonzalez at one time for being offensive to Mexicans. This was met by a major protest by Mexicans due to Speedy Gonzalez being seen in a positive light by them. Speedy Gonzalez has since been returned to air.

Schools banning Mark Twain's classic "Huck Fin" for using the n-word. However it uses the n-word to attack racism and reveal it in society.
“The nation that will insist upon drawing a broad line of demarcation between the fighting man and the thinking man is liable to find its fighting done by fools and its thinking by cowards.”

Just some of the many examples where political correctness is going bonkers

My problem with the PC brigade is, as many would agree; it simply goes too far.

It's intention is to not cause offence, and make everybody feel comfortable etc - but in reality it's at the stage now where people often do cause offence simply by telling other people they are no longer allowed to do something in case it causes offence.

My father used to work as a probation officer. He was told that he and his co-workers were no longer allowed to cook bacon in the kitchen for their breakfast in case it offended one of their new co-workers who was Muslim. This caused the staff to react in a less than positive way as they clearly didn't like being told what *they* could and could not eat.

Everybody knows of examples of things like this - in a lot of cases it seems like the person who we are trying to make sure 'isn't offended' often doesn't care, and didn't say a thing.

That is true, it's when the PC brigade does something they think is PC but is actually bollocks. Like banning Three Little Pigs in order not to offend Muslims and Jews, total nonsense. It's just a story, which my mother loves to tell the little Pakistani children.

There is no such thing as a PC brigade.

Just individuals who make decisions based on what they think is best for their company, though sometimes they make mistakes.

I wouldn't call the Education system a 'company', the PC brigades are the lobbyists...

    What about the education system?

The cited examples are Cartoon Network and some (private?) schools.

Here in the UK, it was the schools which banned Ba ba Black sheep and Three little piggies. Our schools are state run.

The point being, political correctness is propogated by not those who are directly offended by it, but think others will be. Empathy to the extreme, if you will.

Obviously there is no "PC brigade" complete with their own HQ and badge - it's just a term for the people who take this all too far.

I think another seriously bad effect of this is it can actually cause people to dislike those that the changes are meant to make us like.

    Example.

PC brigade comes hurtling in and changes something - let's say PC brigade as you say, asks for us to not tell the story of 3 little piggy's so as not to upset anyone.

It's not long before someone starts going "yeah ing Muslims, coming into our country - BANNING OUR KIDS STORIES! who do they think they are!?"

It can easily have very negative consequences.

There are some people who spend far too much time trying to double guess people. For example, I was having a discussion about words used to describe disabled people. My mother is deaf. She considers herself deaf. She is part of the deaf community. She uses sign language and can lipread/speak. Yet, some feel she woulds be offended by the label 'deaf' and officially the term used to describe someone who is deaf is 'hearing impaired'. Farcical.

I am starting a course on autism. We have to use the phrase 'with autism' rather than 'autistic' when talking about individuals. As I pointed out, I am asthmatic rather than someone with asthma.

PC can be a powerful tool, but it is so overused and applied so bluntly, that all those who seek to change attitudes (which is laudable) end up alienating those it serves to protect and trivialises the problems it can be very useful for. I do wish common sense was actually applied at times.

It must be noted that there are some individuals who do in fact object to such things...but they shouldn't be put above the majority.

There was a big fuss a little while over a janitor who was reading a book called "How the KKK was beat by Notre Dame" or something like that. A co-worker objected to it because the book had the words KKK on it. The janitor was fired over this...

If that is true, it's completely the biggest idioticy I've ever seen. I agree with Frankie Boyle on this one, PC is spastic gay talk.

RT's other series The Strangerhood had a similar christmas message one year. They ended up having to celebrate Rama-Chris-Manaka.

Political correctness in Canada: Despite there being limited wish for it, the teachers placate Creationists in ****ing Anthropology class, making their students write about the bible, the positives of the theories, the negatives of evolution, etc.

Cant offend the bible thumpers, after all.
