He shouldn't re-spawn in that case unless you are a catholic faction yourslef

There is going to be one eventually but I have read somewhere that the Papal State will ask a Catholic faction to give him a settlement and for that have a perfect relationship with them but I didn't test it so.... Take it as it is untill someone has really tested it.

Well, I once had a dead papacy, and neitehr the AI nor I wanted to have any priests, so the Papal States were a leaderless faction

I tried this with Moors once, auto_wining my way to catholic wide domination. The Papal states still exists, they just don't have anything. No land, no family members, no armies, no money etc. Even if all the Catholic factions have been destroyed, the Papal States live on.

EDIT: Sorry, no screen shots, at the time I didn't know how to post them, so I didn't bother taking them in the first place, but ask anyone else who's done blitzed with Turks or something, they'll say the same thing.
