Default The general who just couldn't make it :D

I was able to adopt a young general and was planning to make him into a full chiv war hero.

    ...well until 'it' happened

Good stats, best candidate of the three in my city.
I sent him with only his bodyguard out to kill a unit of rebel peasants and autoresolved it. He lost shockingly

Next round I fought the battle myself, the first casualty in a cavalry charge was the general strangely. One other poor soul accompanied him to death.

Has this ever happened to anyone else? I thought this was totally random and the odds are GREATLY against it ever happening.

The peasants routed a couple seconds later...

Thats unlucky man. If you can, try charging your bodyguard unit so the guys in the right front line connect first (your general is on the left) esp when hitting spearmeny type guys.

I once lost an awesome English general in deepest darkest France to a single bombard shot from miles away. There was only 2 units in the enemy army and i had a full stack. I decided to retreat in honour of that bombardier. He probably became a minor celeb and met the French king. Growing old on the story of how he killed a 8 star general. I raise a glass to him.

If he's reading this, good shot sir, good shot.

If you charge with your general, use the rally call a few seconds (2-3) before the lines meet. This usually causes your general to slow or stop for a bit so that he is no longer in the front of the unit.

strange...im usually quite flippant about the life of my general, and find that a good leading general charge at the very start of a battle to 'pin' the enemy for your infantry is a great way to win my generals never die from this. probably its because they quickly get + hp attrobutes due to such treatment. Also if yr general is in a town when u build an armory, they get fine armor which adds +4 hp...they will live a long time then. I think i usually have this upgrade before i start using them from my build style but i never really thought to be careful. Charging the enemy also happens to be a great way to avoid getting killed from random missles and stuff like the disaster that befel the poor guy above

    some good tips up there

but ya, I hate it when generals randomly die like like...
    at least my generals.

Once I had a game where the enemy was defending and he starting shooting off some arrows from the back ranks. I sent some crossbowmen to pick off his heavy infantry so he sent his general... right in front of his archers. All of a sudden the archers fired off and a couple arrows hit the enemy general at point blank. Not a pretty sight for him, but good for me!

Once I had a a fight where two generals bodyguards were fighting eachother in the america campaign, one english and I was spanish. One of their siege weaps hit the enemy general POINT BLANK and he didnt die. The blast radius killed my general and everything around him. My units routed after that darn invincible general :'(

Well I would retreat too if I faced a general who survived a siege blast!

Happens every time and it pisses me off. Those rebels are annoying!

It's like two full armies just pop up by my capital!

this is crusades, but two campaigns in a row I took Richard into his firrst battle, both times he had a full, elite stack, against a small force. a sure win, right? right. but nevertheless, the first catapult shot of both battles fell incredibly short and guess who gets a dented helmet. that's right, Richard. I've only played two Jerusalem campaigns, so he's never surived his maiden voyage. and guess what happened to the first crusading noble in a Teuntonic campaign? correct... damned catapulters...

Thats why I don't use catapults XD

But its really funny when I was playing as spain and had my main force fighting france and I controlled sicily. The HRE sends a full stack down and lays seige to my city! Oh noes! Well next turn it rebels lol!

So now I had a full stack of rebels and time to prepare for their next attack

    Here is a screenie:

ah blast it can't find it,

ah well I'll post a very very strange autoresolved battle

Here is another case of what I was talking about:

    I love when that happens

I was fighting that blasted english colonist general and I got him in a group of sword and buckler men and they killed off his body guard and they were batting him back and forth THE WHOLE FIGHT. Well my general got killed by him and my army routed. Sheesh, whats that about. At least I got him by auto-resolving hehehe

There must be some sort of invincibility trait for him or something gosh!

The vulnerability of Generals to large missile objects has been discussed in a few threads... it always hits 'em first...

I usually let the Generals bodyguard charge a lot, because I play factions with bad cavalry, and so the bodyguard units are sometimes my only heavy cav at the beginning. Never, ever, lost a general... until recently: First time Danish crusade, two stacks, both very capable generals, no bad traits or anything. First battle against the egyptians: outnumbered 2:1, really cool field battle (should post some screenies...), I'm slowly turning the odds in my favor, when my general, while pursuing some bloody routing infantry, suddenly falls dead of his horse! Heroic victory nevertheless, but what the heck. Second battle: even worse odds, but I'm defending a city. Blocked the gate with spear militia, held off wave after wave, finally the enemy decides to flee, I sent in my bodyguard to make sure they really leave... bam again! General's dead... Strange coincidence, isn't it? I decided to play on in both cases, because it's kind of fitting for Viking generals to fall in battle, but hey, at least they could have died charging the enemy frontline or something... not while pursuing bloody routing left-overs...
