Free upkeep ?

I just never pay attention to the free upkeep thing.
But with SS as i'm having money problem i did, and it seems i don't have any free upkeep

In my settlements, my units that are supposed to have a free upkeep have an upkeep cost.
When i click on unit they are supposed to show 0 as upkeep cost, right ?


I loaded only SS6.0 and patch 6.1 from the SS6.1 released thread, is it normal ?

yeah same thing happening with me, but i use money cheats so its not buggin me that much.

In cities free upkeep units are its militia units it can produce (spear militia, crossbow militia etc) as well as any guild units it can produce.

Castles also have free upkeep units, but this varies from faction to faction most free units are the ones you can produce by simply upgrading the castle. (to fortress e.g.)
The free upkeep units will look a little darker in the unit area when selecting the city or castle in the campaign map.
Personally I only keep free upkeep units in cities not bordering on enemies to save my money for other things

So if i understand it right, it won't show 0 as cost for free upkeep but just a color change ?

I wish it works, that would help me to save money!!

I will check but i don't think i have any darker units in my campaign settlements:hmmm:

It works. I keep a garrison force of free upkeep in cities inside my borders, and even those near the edge if a castle is nearby. My castles usually have a full garrison force, so a free defence force in the city is enough to hold attackers at bay until reinforcements can come and wipe them out.

Those who are free-upkeeped units in castles or settlements, are those with darkblue background.. and those cost nothing when they're in the settlement, but not all units have this ability. Also when on a crusade or jihad your units will have 0 in upkeep, until its finished or destroyed.

If you want to lower the upkeep for some units or so, you can easily do so, by editing the export_descr_unit.fil.. which is located in your SS/data folder..

You're right it works, i never noticed that color difference, and it is even written on the tag when you put the cursor on the unit.
