I am just kind of curious why this faction is so popular. Any thoughts on this? It does not interest me very much...

Well i dont reallly feel the byzant either but thier location is really good. Its easy enough to get the itilian lands = much money. you could also go towwards the holy lands which is also really good money but then you have to deal with the mongols or tims but i think its easier to deal with them your self before they get a empire going cause taking the land from them sucks. Other then that idk why any one would play them. Their troops suck, you never get any good allies, maybe just russia. The most important to me is no crusade/jihad that kinda ruins alot for russia and byzant for me@!
So your saying it is basically because of their position that people pick them?
Because it is the Roman Empire... need I say more?
falnk with cavlary. stay a way from muder hoels.
Ehh... so if they are the roman empire then who is the holy roman empire?
Okay, i want to try and play this faction since i have just never played them before. Is there any mods that i should get for this faction?
Holy Roman Empire.
Heiliges Römisches Reich/Sacrum Romanum Imperium Nationis Germanicae. You see, Carolus Magnus (Charlemagne) in his life carved himself quite an empire, and during his life, Pope Leo III decided to crown him Imperator Augustus. The next in line to Emperor was called King of the Romans. You see, the point eventually became that there were up to eight electors and they would decide who would be the sovereign of the empire, protecting it from enemies (first it was unified, but german princes got so many rights, that they were self-ruling rather than under a centralised government). However, the nations in the empire didn't appreciate having to be crowned by the Pope and tended to be rather hostile to the point that the Pope was ignored. Also, italian nations didn't become Emperor because they just weren't a very willing part of the Empire (Research: Lombard League).
By the time the Great Schism had come to an end, the empire was not Roman in the slightest, not an Empire because the germans were all little independent nations; though guaranteed protection by the Emperor/Empress (Research: Maria Theresia) and there were frequent wars. Of course, during this time and beyond it pretty much become hereditary for the Habsburg rulers since they held on to the title for centuries on end. Even if bribing was neccessary. Point is however, it's demise came, when King François I of France dismantled it. However, the Confederation of the Rhine, the North German Federation and South German Federation could be considered it's successors though they never covered the great extent of the Holy Roman Empire. It disintegrated in the early XIX. Century.
Hack my post to bits and correct it, but it pretty much sums it up,
Also, what is this AOD mod i here of that is suppose to make byzantine empire look cooler? Does anyone know anything about it?
I don't really care for them since I mostly play European factions.
well, in BC and CBRP they have some of the order and feeling of "mooving wall" that the romans had in RTW.
"WE WILL SMITE THE INVADERS FROM OUR SKIES! Though they sweep over our lands like the sands of winter, never again will we bow before them; never again endure their oppression; never again endure their tyranny. We will strike without warning and without mercy, fighting as one hand, one heart, one soul. We will shatter their dreams and haunt their nightmares, drenching our ancestors' graves with their blood. And as our last breath tears at their lungs; as we rise again from the ruins of our cities...they will know: Helghan belongs to the Helghast." -Scholar Visari
Personally, there are a few reasons I love playing as them. In no particular order...
1. I love their location. Controlling the richest city in the game, defending them from easterners and westerners is a nice challenge, and because of this, your always the center of attention in the campaign.
2. Your Orthodox. Which means that neither Catholics or Muslims are your friends. You hold the Capital to Orthodox Christianity, and answer to no one else except yourself.
3. Once again, location, location, location. Your empire is on the crossroads of east and west. Because of this, trade, crusades, jihads, politics and the like will be passing through your lands. You will always be in the thick of it.
4. Controlling the silk trade. Having control of all trade access from the Aegean to the Black Sea, you can rake it in the money from the silk trade operating out of Constantinople, and enjoy the riches from a flourishing commodities trade throughout the Mediterranean.
5. They're Romans
6. Last but not least: Greek Flamethrowers. Greatest unit. Period.
I agree with Spartan90. For all of those reasons and for many more.

Okay, i think i understand it a little. That mod that will come out soon looks great! But it seems as if they have a lot to do still.
