You exchange goods with settlements from other factions, through land or sea routes. This contributes to the income of your settlements trading. Simple really.

trade rights enable your cities to open trade routes with cities from the other faction. This does increase your income. I think it depends on the cities and their proximity and what buildings you have to get the trade routes. You can see what the trade routes are for each city in the building browser. Hope this helps

My understanding is if you have trade rights with a factions, any trade with them you have with them will give you more money then if you did not have trade rights with them. You can still tade with them if you don't have trade rights but you won't get as much money.

The game will find trade rights automatically. If you mean realistically, don't ask me.... RTW is a simulation.

can trade ever negate the figures though rather than them being positive. As Armenia I open trade with Carthage and Seleucids and thats it?

    Carthage for their purple dye
And Seleucids cause of their ever expanding empire.

Trade negating figures? You mean can trade rights make things worse? No. Trade rights are always better than no trade rights.

So the only strategic point is do you want to make the person your trading with stronger.

I believe scutarii was correct; trade rights increase trade profits with that faction. You can trade with any you are not at war with, but trade rights increases income for both factions.

IMproves your realtions with other factions and expands your trade routes(more money), altough by the middle or end of the game they are useless.

Without trade rights, you trade with the neighboring provinces automatically, unless at war. With trade rights, you get twice as much profit in export and import. Usually export is the higher number by far.
