Isfahan is a must-see, but Tehran must not be missed either. I also strongly suggest that you visit Chabahar, since it sits right on the gulf. Beautiful beaches with white sand that is as fine as powder. It's actually a pretty popular tourist spot.

My maternal grandpa's side of the family is descended from Shiraz Armenians (last name is Shirazyan). And parts of my maternal grandmother's family were forcibly exiled to Iran under Stalin.

People are really friendly. I was buying some water pipes in a Bazar one day and alot of accessories. for 300US$, some Iranian suddenly got involved and started barging for ME, a total stranger to them. Defendig me. Inspecting the merchendice, demanding better. This happend several times in several differnt places.
In my whole trip, I didnt even see one negative face. Not a single one. They either treated you as an equal, like everybody else, or as a friend. I was thinking "wtf! You are isolated people who hate the west, what happend? were is the bombs and crying mothers? the barbaric culture from CNN/BBC and the axis of evil?"
I did only see one backpacker from the west.
As long as your not from USA or Denmark, some cases british. your totaly OK. Reamember to respect there culture and law, and they will respect you as their fellow brother or sis.
PS: I also travelled with the UN Chif-ambassador of Irani, who once in a while, helped me see the great things in Tehran.
This is my secound best vecation, after my best one "2Mnth trip to Ivory Coast, west Africa."

It is not like the media portrays it at all...in afct it attracts many(a lot seriously) tourists every year. The olny thing is that it has some very strict rules but it's not as evil as it's portrayed...

1. The Iran Gov. dont like vestern tourist that much(unrest). Just think about a big drunken English man.
2.As long the ladys were a scarf, respect the religus life, no alchol in public(If you need to smugle alc. into the country, I know how.)
3. Yeah many do, but the Caspian sea is THE holliday place. There is a little island(international) just of the coast, were rich Iranian people get drunk

My uncle visited Kish in 1974 and at that time it was the "Dubai" of the 70s, actually it went one step further by having those giant casinos and all sort of entertainment. I have no idea how it looks now, but before it was the Kish where people went, not Dubai or Doha.Well what about Kish in the Persian gulf too?.My cousin is Dubai told me that she heard that everything is poorly organised there

The richer people of northern tehran is not that hatefull to british, they only wear their scarf around their hair.. with lots of make-up and flirty faces
the older right wing people of the south is a little more conservative.
One day, I and some others were taking a walk in the national cemetary/museum of tehran. Just wondring our own busniess, suddenly some bystanders noticed our precense. They offerd to tour/show us the whole enormeus site, normal people.
For 2 whole hours, they talked about history, Iran-Irakwar, heroes and leaders, the revolution. Some old woman, totaly stranges, started to give us muffins, and they wouldnt let us go until we ate the whole box
This is how they generally are in Iran.
Very revealing trip all in all.
