German commandos storms aircraft and arrest terror suspects

German commandos stormed a KLM airliner at Cologne-Bonn airport today and arrested two men who were suspected of wanting to carry out terrorist attacks, according to reports.

The commandos boarded the aircraft, bound for Amsterdam, and arrested a 23-year-old Somali and a 24-year-old German citizen of Somali origin.

A police spokesman told the German television channel, N24, that the men wanted to carry out a "holy war". According to the police, the pair had been under observation for months.

A special commando unit moved forward with the arrests in the early hours of the morning after suicide notes were found in the men's apartments detailing their Islamist attacks.

It is believed they planned an attack on US bases in Germany.

There are three types:

MEK (Mobiles Einsatzkommando , mobile task force) of the police of the Länder (federal states); used in regular police work, similar to SWAT.

SEK (Spezialeinsatzkommando, special task force), also of the Länder; used in hostage situations and against terrorism

GSG9 (from Grenzschutzgruppe, border patrol group) of the federal police (Bundespolizei, former border patrol or Bundesgrenzschutz), used in hostage situations and against terrorism.

I assume it was SEK, because a federal state (Northrhine-Westphalia) led the investigations and the operation took place in that state.

And they're probably not the best in the world, because they lack practice.

GSG9 were the ones I was thinking of, thanks +rep. I saw a documentary on their performance when terrorists high-jacked a train and took over a school, I was impressed, only 1\1.5 instances though I suppose

Wrong. The plane was not stormed or assaulted.This is all over the news in my country since the plane was dutch and it wasn't stormed. The police went onboard to arrest the suspects just before it departed. After that the passengers had to leave the plane and a bagage parade was held to see which bagage belonged to whom. After that the plane departed with a one hour delay.

I wasn't aware that everyone does.

I'm left scratching my head though where someone came up with describing it as german commandos storming a plane. All I read is about police officers boarding the plane and arresting two suspects. No special units, no storming, nothing to see here.

Granted they do have sick guns like the mp-7 but I would say Israel is best as they have the fewest rules and most experience. Also great guns...

at any rate, it is very nice to see that the Germans are on top of their terrorism threats.

I am actually quite familiar with SEK teams from NRW. I used to live in Bielefeld for two years.
