Jack Thompson disbarred in Florida

Attorney, er, former anti-games attorney Jack Thompson has apparently been disbarred by the state of Florida. It's been a long time coming, but the Court has finally decided that Jack Thompson should "be permanently disbarred without leave to apply for readmission to The Florida Bar."

Mark Methenitis, an attorney who pens Joystiq's Law of the Game, writes us, "While I know a lot of people in the industry truly dislike Jack, I hope people show a bit of respect for a man who has just lost his livelihood. I also hope people realize that this doesn't mean we've heard the last from Jack. I wouldn't be surprised to see him start his own nonprofit group to continue to advance his viewpoint."

We spoke with a representative for The Florida Bar and asked if the association had any further comment. She responded, "We feel the documents speak for themselves."

The list of reasons for his disbarring is impressive
apparently he mailed mailed the court inappropriate sexual materials, engaged in accusing various attorneys and clients for being part of a conspiracy in distribution of sexual materials to minors and among other things it seems mr thompson's been going around harassing people and their wives..

I actually have some mixed feelings on the subject:

On the one hand, there's no denying that his disbarment is richly deserved. He's a disgrace to the American legal profession....and that's really saying something in this day and age.

On the other hand, however, I kinda wish he was still practicing law and filing bogus lawsuits against game developers/publishers. I say that because as long as he's doing so -- as long as he's the primary face of the anti-game loonies -- he discredits the whole lot of them just by association and makes them all look like the reactionary, over-zealous fools that they are. As the saying goes, "Better the devil you know, than the devil you don't."

Also, he's quite frankly so darn entertaining, that it's sort of a shame to think we won't hear from him much anymore. I always got major chuckles reading about his insane antics -- I'm going to miss him.

Psh. I'm not angry he lost his livelihood. If whining about video games that aren't marketed towards kids anyway is the only thing he can represent cases on, I'm glad he's out on the streets. Guy shouldn't have been given the job he had in the first place.

I remember that program. "Brimstone" or something like that, wasn't it? He was a cop who was invulnerable to harm unless his eyes were destroyed. That was some crazy-arsed television. He used to get his orders from Satan every episode, who would perform "evil" practical jokes like loosening the top of the salt-shakers in restaurants.

You have to pass the Bar exam in a state to practice law in that state, if you get disbarred, then you can no longer practice.

So he's only barred from Florida?

I'm guessing he only used to have permission to practice law in Florida prior to this.. so that bars him from anywhere in the states.

Well yeah, but he would have to pass the bar in another state to practice there, there's a bar for each state.

And they may be hesitant to let him take it in other states.
