    Default Earth!

Im quite positive that im posting in the wrong section, so if someone can move that'd be nice.

Anywho, given predictions for the world's population balloning to 7-9billion in the next few decades is it possible that earth simply will start to break in terms of climate and the ability to produce resources? The fact that the U.S. and other developed nations are taking strides to fight this is great, but we still got China and India blowing holes in the ozone, and their populations will only rise (i think)

will overpopulation screw us all or will we still be able to live comfortably?
    Source!
Question our seminar teacher gave us.

well there will always be regulations on population as resources dwindle violence will spread over the earth, even more so--- but if we can manage and conserve our resources and maintain a large population-- I think it will eventually balance out as long as we have good education and waste management

but if we dont do anything other than keep ing and spitting out maggots all over the rotting skin of this earth -- then we will all die ( well our species I mean)

China's population growth will start slowing down soon but India's population will keep growing and it's population will be larger than China's at some point. (Hopefully) population growth in South-East Asia will slow down soon because it will be hard for countries such as Japan, South and North Korea, China, Taiwan and Thailand to control their huge populations. America's and Europe's population won't grow hugely but if diceases and wars in Africa can be stopped then Africa's population will just explode, though it's pretty big already now.

Sorry for my English, it's not my first languange.

As you can't really do äÄ's unless you copypaste them, it was generally correctly spelt; the exact one would be Jääskeläinen.

Ontopic, I don't think there will be too many problems exept for famine; but as the african and asian (chinese) population seems to be growing constantly while in west birthrate seems to be in general decline, multiculturalism is probably going to change a bit of stuff as immigrant minorities may become majorities. Hard to say, really.

Someone in class tossed in the fact that an epidemic or some other calamity could shake things up to, it's scary thinking what an outbreak of some kind of disease could do to india or china

In the long run however an epidemic in India or China would probably be good for the Earth. I don't mean to sound or evil or anything, but if there was a epidemic in China, India and the rest of Southeast Asia it would greatly reduce the problem of overpopulation. Hundreds of thousands if not more would die, sad but would benefit the earth.

    Japans population is actually decreasing...

Population models show different stages of growth. When a nation gets up to an certain standart of life the population growth will not be as much. Some countries (Such as Japan) have already gotten past that and are in the 4th part of the model, where their population is decreasing.

It has already been said that Indias population will "outgrow" China but in the long run the population will decrese again as we do not have the resources needed for too many people.

    Eventually.

Which is why we should get other planets. And we do not live comfortably now - there are earthquakes, storms, etc etc a lot of problems. The earth is broken since the beginning and many animals before us have been screwed to completely extermination without even getting over-populated.

We can't "get" other planets in the same way we send probes to other planets in the solar system. What would need to happen is either the Terraforming of Mars (which ATM is practically impossible and would take hundreds of years to become Habitable) or the magical discovery of a secret life-supporting planet hiding in the asteroid belt. As for a planetary carrying capacity, it cannot exist.
The earth is a closed system, theoretically we can never run out of everything unless we shoot it all off into the sun. We can use it up in the sense that the resources will be spread so thin that a large chunk of the population will not see it but it will still be there. one way or another there will be a massive population crash sometime within the next 200 years either by way of a massive conflict, disease, population restrictions backfiring (China's one child policy and preference for male children for example).
What it will eventually boil down to is the need for responsible leadership and production choices, the idea of colonizing other planets is on the same level of a spoiled child wanting a new toy b/c he or she has worn it out so completely that it has no more to offer.

We need to start moving out into the Solar System, founding mining colonies on the Moon, Mars, the Asteroid Belt, and Helium-3 mining colonies at the gas giants. The material worth of these worlds would flow back to Earth, fueling our industry and powering the planet. The overpopulation crisis would be solved by building massive arcologies across the planet in major cities. Agricultural land would be taken back as people moved into the cities, and feeding the human population would cease to be a problem. We could even flood the center of Australia or the Sahara, creating more agricultural land.

Those are my ideas. Feel free to rip 'em to shreds; I am by no means an expert.

Interesting stuff but it will be centuries before any of it can be realized. the arcologies bit is a bit overdone IMO. Why not start here on Earth before we move into space and use even more resources constructing and maintaining such structures. Picture structures a mile tall and say 3 wide, inside are living spaces, offices and basic food production centers for say 200,000 residents, with the food areas doubling as recreational areas and green space. The building's massive footprint and height would allow it to make full use of solar panels and wind turbines for power. The semi-closed nature of the Arcology would promote recycling on a scale rarely seen today and waste would be kept to a bare minimum and used to fertilize the green spaces. Link say ten of these beauties together and you have A city the size of Chicago with something like 80% less consumption rates. Oh and that's a pipe-dream BTW

Yes over population is a dangeorus thing, and I'm afraid we'll be forced to use what we got more efficiently and less soon.

"Therefore I am not in favour of raising any dogmatic banner. On the contrary, we must try to help the dogmatists to clarify their propositions for themselves. Thus, communism, in particular, is a dogmatic abstraction; in which connection, however, I am not thinking of some imaginary and possible communism, but actually existing communism as taught by Cabet, Dézamy, Weitling, etc. This communism is itself only a special expression of the humanistic principle, an expression which is still infected by its antithesis – the private system. Hence the abolition of private property and communism are by no means identical, and it is not accidental but inevitable that communism has seen other socialist doctrines – such as those of Fourier, Proudhon, etc. – arising to confront it because it is itself only a special, one-sided realisation of the socialist principle."
