Weirdest thing with the Pope ...

So, I was playing as France. About 130 /140 turns in, I control most of Europe and am at war with everyone - including The Papal States and am (obviously) excommunicated.

Now, the strangest thing. I took the Papal States' last province, (Rome), and - from what I understand - another Catholic faction should at that stage donate a territory to the Pope so the faction is not destroyed. But they didn't.

The Pope was killed in the battle for Rome. The newly elected Pope materialized with his bodyguard just outside Rome's city walls. So ... I arranged a little welcoming party to congratulate him on his appointment.

I did the same thing with the next 5 or 10 Popes. (As you may imagine, my relationship with The Papal States was not blossoming at this stage).

Then I noticed that, as I killed off all these Popified foreign Cardinals, I was starting to get my own Cardionals appointed (I had loads of Huge Cathedrals etc.) After a while, I had a majority on the Papal See (or whatever the Papal electoral college is called.)

So I got to elect a French Pope!

And he loved me. My rating with the Papal States went from Abysmal to Perfect overnight. And no more excommunication.

Just goes to prove that old saying: 'If you're in trouble, just keep murdering Popes until something comes up."

This rminds me of the old MTW where you could put up a puppet pope. Why they didn't include that in M2TW I shall never know...

Yeah good ol' Anti-Pope....I do a bit a RP when I get excommunicated, I place my highest ranking Priest/Bishop/Cardinal in the Capital and then just say there the Anti-Pope....

bah, when i got my pope elected he still excommed me just cuz i was massacaring spain!

id spent ages assasinating all rival cardinals too!

If you want no excommunication make the pope your vassel.

Can it be done??? Even if you can do so you can get excomunated anyway + if the Papal state is allied with someone you attack he will keep is alliance with the one who a a better Global Rep and relationship with ??

SO you're idea doesn't work sorry

Or play as a Mulsim or Orthodox faction...

Ill be honest, although I think the religious aspect of the game is kind of cool, I personally find that having one of my Cardinals become pope really does not benifit me all that much. I alawys hoped that when one of my guys becomes the pope it would open up new diplomatic options or something, but all it really does is increase your reputation with the pope for a while.
