Ok here's the deal.
Suggest TWO tv series and tell everyone else why these series are so good - and why they should watch them.
C'mon people - sell these! Show that these shows are so good people can't NOT watch it.

#1 The Wire
FANTASTIC Tv series - showing both sides in Baltimore; the drug dealers and the police.
The police are not the cliched shite you will see on other programes - but all come across as real people. The drug dealers likewise; some have honour, some don't - some are happy doing what they do - others got roped into it - either way they all come across as real people.
Over the course of the seasons you can't help but develop a genuine sympathy for the drug dealers - as you come to realise that ultimately most of them are in the situation they are in as they lack an education and lack oppurtunities - most of them are just trying to make a living in a world where the odds are stacked against them - society does nothing for them, and so they do nothing for society.
Likewise, the police are a mixed bunch - some are just in it cause they are good at it, others like McNulty are in the job to make a difference, but the difference they make is minimal due to 'red tape' and corruption - and even this small difference comes at a cost to their own private lives.
It's all very well acted and the story moves at the pace of a good book - in fact, you'd be forgiven for thinking this was a book set out over 20 episodes - as it was written not by 'script writers' but by authors - and boy do these guys know how to tell a good story. You won't find many cliches in here - you won't find the Cop who does things his own way andeveryone else - you won't find the hard-ass chief who does things by the back - nothing is black and white - everything is coloured in shades - if it can be said to be 'coloured' at all.
Well worth a watch - but it takes a few episodes to settle into the swing of things.

#2 Battlestar Galactica
Unlike normal sci-fi programes this one focuses on the human race as the underdog - fleeing the very machines they created which are now intent upon exterminating every last one of them.
After a surprise attack humanity numbers a mere 50,000 and has only one battleship, the rest being transport/civillian vessels.
The script is good and the acting likewise is of a good standard. The best thing about this is despite the fact it involves humanity fleeing from killer robots it comes across as believable - only a few episodes in and you can connect with the characters and understand what they are going through.
Some of the characters are superbly done - such as Gauis Baltar - on the one hand responsible for humanity's brush with extinction, on the other hand; the only man who has the intelligence to come up with a way to save humanity. This constant conflict between traitor and hero that Baltar experiences (the rest of the crew unaware of his role in the initial attack) makes for compelling viewing.
