Is it possible to increase the size of the units in RTW?

In the history channel series, descive battles, from what I can notice, it seems that the people in history channel managed to mod the units and scale them up on a one-one scale.

From what I can see in some episodes, it seems that a 500 men unit is possible.

Perhaps the modding team is able to crack the hardcoded unit limit?

I don't think so. There is a way to get at least double the men per unit (using animals), but it creates other issues with the hardcoded AI behaviour.

you can use custom battles for that but set the setting first to very huge then the first half your team the second half your enemy then enjoy the epic battles

I tried that once It only shows on the unit selection menu before the battle. but once the battle starts it maxes out to 243.

mine wont though only 243 thats small there was a mod here i think EB which can really max out the units "EB hardcoded limits something" which you can download here at the download section
