You can choose any faction as your ally, but not all factions are as good as allies as you would like. England and Milan are factions that will typically ally with you in the beginning, but stab you in the back later on once they feel they can take you on. That is why most people advise you to sent them back to their bloody island, as it will provide a stabile peace (they don´t like to cross water).
You will get more generaly with time (when your family starts to mature), and when you conquer sufficient regions, you will get adoption candidates. Unless you have them dying dozens at a time, you shouldn´t run out of generals.
Some factions you shouldn't bother allying with because their progrommed to want to destroy you. This means that even though your relationship with them could be 100% but then they decide to shoot an arrow at your face for fun.

I played as England once and had peaceful co-existence with the French for more then 200 turns. So, if its in your interest then you should ally yourself with nations that are presumed to be your mortal enemies. Its all about politics after all.

Jon had taken Donal and Benjen’s advice to heart: Sam may be fat and pathetic, but he is still a member of the watch, and one of the few black brothers who isn't a rapist or thief. (out of context, this sounds ridiculously racist)

No. It is not wrong.
You must remember, though, that it is tougher to fight on many fronts than it is to fight on one. If you get embroiled in a war with Spain, and then HRE, Milan, and/or the danes go after you AND THEN england backstabs you; you can be in hot soup. So, often, players take out the islands, first, to eliminate a front.
So, ally with England if it serves your purpose. But always be asking yourself: "What would happen if England attacked me, now?" And take appropriate precautions.
Do what you want never bother with others opinion, you wish the play as is then do it, but if you would tell me that your England then yes you can ally with France but after about 20 turns or so they will betray your for sure, believe me. The other way around no problem.
to have more generals: You can Adopt them, if you are getting low in general the Game will offer some that you can adopt, don't adopt the first one on the stop check for their stats, choose them.
Or you have your general get married have children and wait for them to be 16
English and France hated one another during the Medieval era, fortunately the English always kicked French butt. But you can do whatever, that's what I like about TW series!
Give a man a fire, and he'll be warm for the rest of the day.
Set a man on fire, and he'll be warm for the rest of his life.
It is wrong. So so wrong...
I play as England(when not as byzantine) and I form alliances with all my neighbours at the beginning but when conflicts begin the first I drop are the Scottish and the French and I keep the HRE Spain and Portugal as allies.
believe it or not, there actually were times in the medieval period that england and france were allied. The hundred years war was only a hundred years, ya know.
haha, regardless of the technicalities here you understand, im sure, what im saying. england and france were not always at war. In fact, they didnt always hate eachother. In fact, even when they were at war, and did the most brutal things to eachother, there was always a strange element of admiration to it. Also, its not true that england always won. Certainly england wouldve been at the mercy of france for most of the middle ages if france was not also always fighting spain, italy, and germany.
