Default RTW Gold Edition - Crash on startup

    Hi there

I just tried to install RtW Gold Edition and well, I'm able to install it but the game never asks me for my verification code. A strange start but it gets worse...

After the installation is finished, the game starts but once the intro is over, the game crashes, I just get a black screen and have to kill the process by hitting Ctrl+Alt+Delete. Hitting Esc to cancel the intro doesn't help, starting the game differently (from disc, via short cut etc) doesn't work either and I already uninstalled and installed it again: no difference.

I already searched the forums, the only problem similar to mine was this: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showt...+edition+crash
But I could never start the game succesfully and reinstalling didn't help.

Oh and it's an original version on DVD, nothing downloaded.

I hope someone has an idea on how to solve this.

    Cheers

Well, I insert the DVD, the usual AutoStart panel pops up, I press "Install RTW", choose the language (I've got an european version with english, german and french on it, don't know if that makes any difference) and the folder I want to install RTW. After that it just starts installing the game without ever asking for the code.

Once this is finished, it asks wether I want to install GameSpy or not and the usual "Do you want a Shortcut on your desktop?"-question. I tried to install it with and without gamespy, doesn't make any difference, it still crashes after the intro.

first you need to uninstall/delete everything again but make sure to include the registry for the deletion you can use ccleaner for that then reinstall RTW then its patch the 1.3 one, after that install BI then the 1.6 patch then Alexander then Enjoy playing

If it crashes after the into use the -nm switch (in the same place as the -show_err swictch) - this is the 'no movie' switch. The RTW game uses Windows Media Player for movies - so make sure that you have that.

You install sounds really messed up.

Did you have it installed originally and removed it? If you removed it from your system how did you do that?

As I wrote in my first post, the intro is shown without any problems. The game crashes after the intro is finished and the main menu should appear. And I don't get back to desktop unless I hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete and end the process.

And no, I didn't have Rome installed on this computer before...

Well, it depends upon what you call the 'intro'.....

    There is a 'splash screen'
    Followed by the 'copyright screen'
    Followed by a movie
    Followed by a 'load screen'

The following is how RTR starts (similar to RTW)

I can see all of the movie and then, just after the movie is finished, I get a black screen and it's over.

The fact that it never asked for a CD-Key to register the game implies that it was installed on the PC in the past (you didn't post that).

I'd suggest a complete uninstall including a clear out of the registry - see the following link which is usually referred to for that.

Once you've removed all traces of the game try an install.
