If I can remember correctly, I got a bodyguard with 70 men before! It was the HRE's faction leader, with maxed out everything and great traits!

The danish king and the HRE emperor starts with 51 or something I think.

This always depends on your general's level, but usually the highest's one or for the King and then the Heir, 51 is for the King and 39 is for the Hier . Other family members have less like between 20 to 30.

Maybe I don't have the exact numbers but it's close to that

it really depends if your king is a fighter, a builder or both. Builders will have less, as they wont be experience fighters and stay in the confines of the city. Fighters are in the midst of danger, so get more bodyguards, After sending my Hungarian king on crusade, i got about 38 men from 31

I've had generals with all four attributes maxed out, but their bodygaurds still had less than forty men. Maybe the security traits can play a big role.

I've maxed out at around 70. Obviously, the hierarchy of your characters is taken into affect regarding how many bodyguards you have. This means the King will have the most, followed by the Heir, followed by any other sons the King has, etc. Age, experience and command is taken into affect as well.

It's based on Authority, which is an invisible trait except for kings, when it replaces loyalty. I've had a King with maxed authority get to 68 bodyguards.

So what's the best way to earn authority?

As said, winning battles is one way. However I think other things like the faction rankings, the size of the empire, destroying other factions, how many allies and enemies you have all effect it.

So what's the highest for "normal" unit size?

Or you could get lucky and the general have it when he comes of age/gets adopted.
