Paris - French commandos stormed a luxury yacht on Tuesday to rescue two French tourists who were being held for ransom by heavily armed Somali pirates, President Nicolas Sarkozy said.
One pirate was killed and six others taken prisoner in the pre-dawn assault by some 30 troops. The freed hostages and the captured pirates were put on a French navy ship sailing towards Djibouti, where France has a military base.
"This operation is a warning to all those engaged in this criminal activity. France will not accept that crime pays," Sarkozy said after the operation.

Dahir is hilarious, he works best if you view his posts as satire.
Good on the french for sending this kind of signal to somali pirates. The operation was also supported by german navy recon planes and a malayian hospital ship.

Typical to hear from Dahir. The French were justified completely in apprehending the pirates, rescuing the hostages, and killing ONE somali pirate.
Let's hear Dahir rant against Somalis next, considering they kill more somalis than anyone else.

To those of you going off topic by questioning Somalia's sovereignty or its civil war woes - this is not the place.
Back to topic - the brave Somali naval forces had every right to stake claim to vessels on THEIR seas. And even though they sometimes go too far when they claim yachts and such, they have every reason to be on high alert.
Somalia, for nearly two decades now, since the absence of her real navy - has served as a dumping ground for toxic waste, mostly coming from Europe - as well as free fishing grounds from primarily Asian invaders. This has gone down greatly since the renewal of Somali coastal defense activities ("piracy" to some).

We should not view Somalia's coast guard as "pirates" any longer. They are safeguarding Africa's largest coastline and should be given medals for their bravery against much greater odds.

Since the revival of the Somali Coast Guard, there has not been a single foreign casualty. The Somali Coast Guard is very skilled, contrary to popular beliefs about amateurism among the crews.
Somalia's coastal defense team is only safeguarding their nation, they don't dare to leave THEIR quarters. Its all about defense, not "attacking" any man.

Well, I certainly hope the 'Somalian Coast Guard' isn't attacking the French or Americans, or disrupt their trading routes.This has gone down greatly since the renewal of Somali coastal defense activities ("piracy" to some).
