Default How You Name Your Armies

If you do rename them at all that is.

There was a thread like this for EU3 but it has been gone for ages now, and I have a nice screenshot to sum mine up nicely right now.

    My Key:
Named according to what region I had them stationed in prior to a major war.

A Legion is a force I use for invasion by land, but is also used as to fight off rebels in newly conquered lands.
Expeditionary or Marine means I use them for naval assaults.
Militia means they are smaller and for purely defensive roles against random rebellions in my core provinces. I merged a bunch of them into Legions during the war so I only have one right now.
A Korps is like a Legion but I usually leave them behind the main invasion force, to fight off flanking armies and secure my provinces from attack while the Legions invade.

*an exception is the Saharan Legion, which I have recently rebuilt but have not used for invasion for many decades.

    * I couldn't resist the Nile Delta one.

I don't have EU3 (only EU2, which I barely play) so this is going to refer to HOI2/Vicky armies.

HOI2 Armies have three divs in each and are named like so:

    • I. Corps (Arm.)
    • II. Corps (Mon.)
    • III. Corps (Mot.)

Vicky have five divisions and named as I. Army (Inf.), II. Army (Cav.), and so on.

    Sometimes.

In my current English game I have "TECS", short for "The Ethnic Cleansing Squad". Famous for butchering natives all over Africa, Indonesia and Brazil. Huzzah!

Then we also have the FHLFL, French Heartless Foreign Legion. Heartlessly maiming natives everywhere, making the place for pure-blooded cosmopolitaine! Plus absolutely eradicating whatever armies there are in N.A... Gotta love Latin Tech Group!

Plus, I usually have "North France 22k" etc. to identify my armies. Though if armies have a special purpose, such as colonial guys i name them accordingly.

I usually go for 'Royal Army' for my main homeland army led by the King, and Grand Army for the next biggest homeland army. I usually only have one or two biggies for dealing out punishment back home, and then I have 'Expeditionary Fleets' and '1st Conquistadores' etc for exploring, and '1st Colonial Army/Fleet' for my American troops, '1st African Blahblahblah' in Africa, and '1st Eastern' in Indonesia etc when I go colonising the world

Occasionally I rename armies that perform well - my main army in my last Brandenburg game was called the '1st Royal Frogkickers' after pumelling the French consistently

I usually name my armies after the place they will be in.
like in one game with kingdom of Sardinia:
    Piedmontese army
    Ligurian Army
    Pisean Army
    Modena's Amry
    Army of Sardinia
    1st colonial army
    2nd colonial army

    and so on.

    Then Yoko-Giri, Mawashi-Giri etc....
And the most feared of them, my famous all-cavalry Kick-In-The-Nuts army.

I also try to have the region they are operative in in their names. I find it practical (but ultimately somewhat difficult to maintain, my armies have to stay quite mobile). When I know the language, I also try to have the army name in the language of the country.

    I just use default names.

I change the composition of my armies too much to make it worth naming them.

In my HoI2 Germany game(s) I just named them after where they are and their type, like: I. Nord-Ost Mot. Korps or I. DAK Commando (2x 3 star motorized infantry yay!). I don't like naming my airforce because I change their bases very often.

In EUIII, I name my armies according to the region they're stationed in and according to the size.
Up to 10,000 is a korps, above is an army.

Regarding the regionality, I might either take teh name of a specific province, the name of a historical region or cultural entity that encompasses most or the centre of the respective troops' operational area, or according to the biggest bordering nation considered an enemy.

Examples are Karibikarmee, Hessisches Korps, Danziger Korps and Russlandarmee.

I regularly don't name them in HoI2, dunno why.

Because action in there goes fastand you don't have the time to name armies?...

I kinda of tried to name my armies in HoI2 as Germany, like I.Armeegroup Ost/Süd/West etc...but it got too difficult. Also,I don't speak German so it was even harder.

I always use pause (at first I even did that for trade contracts), so no.

    Name them in Estnian then.

I give them names usually to do with either their composition i.e. I infantry Corps X armoured corps, or to do with their possition 1st Army Group North

The only things I name in HOI2 are the overall group names. For example if a unit has a head quarters in it it is a Gruppenkommando. I have roughly 10 Gruppenkommandos in a game as Germany. I also try to name unique armies for purposes when I am bored building up industry , such as Panzertruppen Korps 1 , or Panzer Army Deutsch Afrika , ect...

Nah,if I would do that,it would sound a little bit weird...I'll think I'll normalize my frontline first and then start naming them again...

It always depends on the "mood" I am in when I'm starting to play the game. If I'm going for a casual play, then I usually don't care at all about the names of my armies. Then again, there are times of absolutely hardcore gaming, where I'm even trying to name every single division of my armies (and the armies themselves of course) according to where they're going to be used and what their task will be.
