South Ossetia, the breakaway Georgian republic and scene of last month’s bitter war, announced today that it will seek to become part of the Russian Federation.
Eduard Kokoity, the President of the tiny enclave which was recognised only a few days ago as an independent state by the Kremlin, said that independence was no longer his goal. Instead he told a group of western journalists and academics that his aim was reuniting Ossetia with its countrymen across the border in North Ossetia, becoming part of Russia.
”We will be part of the Russian Federation,” he said. “It [South Ossetia] is not going to be an independent country.”

UPDATE: The president said he was later misunderstood, but I'm a little suspicious.

All hail Czar Putin, ruler of the United Russias! And to think some on this board deny an resemblance of foreign policy between the Russian Empire and the Russian Federation. Is this anyone's surprise? Did anyone really believe the Russians were doing it to give the Ossetians their own country? Congrats to Russia on pulling off the first territorial annexation in this century...

If South Ossetians want to become part of the RF, then all the power to them. That is their choice, and nobody but them should have any say in it. It's hardly evil imperialism, just a population tired of living under the clumsy and half assed rule of Georgia, looking to improve their situation and stability. Nothing wrong with that.

Cool now we just need to address Tibet, Taiwan...hell maybe the Russians will feel inclinded to offer Russian citizenship to the small group of indians here in the US too.

Proof that the Russian federation 'somehow' instead of saving South Ossetia, it occupied and is now trying to annex South Ossetia? If they want to join North Ossetia, I'm all for it. But they won't be joining the Russian Federation.

Exactly, they basically gain nothing from this, other than having to manage the economy of another smaller state. Its hard to tell whether Russia has any larger plans unfolding in this situation, but so far what happened here is no where near as "imperial" (as people like to describe it) as what the U.S did in Iraq.

personally i believe they will prove me right - the region will become part of russia because 'its what the people want'. Russia will look like an innocent party that merely conformed with SO wishes.
