This thread is meant for posting tricks, advices and generally ways that can help in having a stable campaign or in managing to continue your game after a CTD(crash to desktop). This is not meant for Res Gestae alone. It is more intended to be a thread where people can post suggestions and say what worked for them. Some sort of unofficial advices thread.
Note#1: There are no guarantees that the following proposed methods will work in every case. I have not tested them all myself. In some cases, I have not been able to solve my problems following some of the methods bellow, but others say they`ve worked in their situations so I`ve included them.
NOTE#2: If you make any modifications or delete any files based on the example bellow make sure to make backups first so you can restore them or revert the changes if needed.
Anyway, when you don`t get any error message and you want to continue a campaign, any effort is better then nothing. I`ll start it with a few examples. People are welcomed to add to this by posting here.
1. A CTD when you try to start the campaign with no error message given. It might mean that you need to delete the map.rwm file so that it can regenerate based on the new info. The file is located in Rome - Total War\RG\data\wolrd\maps\base.
2. Deleting the map.rwm files in the middle of the campaign also seems to have some effect after experiencing a CTD. This means you save, exit, delete the file and then restart the game and load the saved game.
3. Also, it has been said that the following method might help if you have a CTD during the AI turn. You should reload the saved game(you`d better have one) and then use the toggle_fow command(type ` then write toggle_fow, then hit enter and then hit ` again to make the panel go away) so you can watch the moves during the AI turn. Remember where the CTD occurs and the next time press esc right before it would have happened. Then save the game and exit. Start the game again and load this saved game. With some luck(it didn`t work for me in one example) you`ll be able to continue the campaign.
4. It has been suggested by Capn Crunch at the rtr forums that the following might be a solution for the reinforcement CTD. The reinforcement CTD(which occurs in many mods) happens especially when you besiege a city and another AI army attacks you from outside. You defeat both armies and after you completely destroy the army in the city you should be able to take it, but instead the game CTDs. I`ll quote here Capn Crunch`s post:
5. It has been suggested in a thread on this matter at the .org that in the case you experience the revolt CTD(it should not be the case with RG which has a measure against it in place, but it doesn`t hurt to note this here too) it helps to leave only one unit in the about to revolt settlement. Not more and not 0 and it should(hopefully) revolt correctly and not crash.I have exactly the same problem, its always just when I've just spent ages defeating the enemy and it CTDs before I can save it!
I have found a temporary solution to this problem though. I'm guessing you have skip AI movements turned on. Before every siege attack or any battle involving a garrisoned force where winning will mean you taking the settlement press Esc, Game Options, change to follow AI movement. After the battle, assuming you won, it will follow the rest of the enemies move then obviously the Occupy, Enslave or Exterminate option. The CTD should not occur which ever option you choose as long as it followed the AI's movement. Just to be safe this method also gives you time to save before the option appears anyway but since I have been doing that it hasn't done it. As you can probably tell I don't have a clue what I'm talking about but a combination of patience and trail and error came to that conclusion. I'm guessing something happens that the game doesn't like when it skips the AI movement which causes the CTD. This method also hinges on the enemy attacking you in their turn, as far as I know its never CTD after a battle you fight during your own turn. Just remember to change to follow AI movement every time before a siege, you can switch back straight afterwards.
6. A CTD after you`ve played 2 or more battles in a row is probably because of a sprite problem. Meaning bad sprites or sprites from a different unit. This problem has never been reported for vanilla RG(not that I know of), but it helps to know it in case you do modifications to your game or you use a mini mod that does those modifications. Anyway, it shouldn`t kill the game afaik. After restarting you should be able to play again the same number of battles in a row.
7. A thing that can help when you have the reinforcement CTD(described above) is that after winning the battle you can press esc before selecting the occupy/enslave/exterminate option(and before the CTD naturally) and save the game. Since this issue is usually random you can then load the saved game and keep trying until you, hopefully, manage to occupy the settlement successfully.
8. It has been suggested here:
http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showt...36#post3637836
that the exterminate/enslave/occupy CTD may happen because of a theoretically blocked retreat of the settlement`s garrison. Which makes the game crash for not being able by its calculation to retreat. So a possible solution would be to lift the siege and try attacking the city from a different direction.
9. A CTD after a large battle during the campaign has been said to be a memory issue and the suggested solution (in more than one thread) for the Europa Barbarorum players is to wait 20-30 seconds or so before pressing the button to exit that battle.
10. Apparently changing the faction using the "play by email" trick can be useful. At least it was in this case:

so I`ll post the link here and you can try it out if you feel up to it. It doesn`t look easy for a beginner and I haven`t tried it myself so I can`t give directions.
