    Default Ike : certain death

I know this isn't a political topic, but guys..if you live somewhere close or you friends/family , please get out of this or tell them to go...

I have never heard such warning like this.

Forecasters Issue Dire Warning as Hurricane Ike Approaches Texas
Authorities say residents living along coastal areas of Texas face "certain death" if they do not evacuate ahead of Hurricane Ike, which could make landfall later Friday or early Saturday.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center says Ike could cause massive waves as well as coastal flooding up to six meters above normal tide levels.

A Potential Life-Threatening Surge from Ike

On its current track, Ike should make landfall along the upper Texas coast late tonight or very early Saturday morning as a Category 2 or Category 3 hurricane. The landfall location will probably be in the zone from the Freeport-Lake Jackson area to Galveston, Texas.

A strike in this portion of the Texas coast will provide dangerous, perhaps life-threatening impacts.

The most severe conditions will impact areas just to the north and east of where the center makes landfall; the right front quadrant of Ike's circulation. Water level rise will be life-threatening in some coastal Texas counties especially Matagorda, Brazoria, Galveston, and Jefferson County. Folks of Cameron County, Louisiana, should also beware of the potentially destructive water level rise along the coast. Because of Ike's very large size, the water level rise produced by Ike will be larger than an average-size Category 2 hurricane.

It's still a Cat. 2, but it's shear size is what makes it dangerous. Look, it's as almost big as the Gulf of Mexico:

This is a monster of a storm guys.

Heh - if He had mercy on them then He would not have sent the hurricane in the first place. Texas must have angered the Lord something fierce to receive such severe punishment.

This must be the first time I have heard them say something like that.
It's usually the "get out for your own safety", not "get out or face death".
I hope enough people listen to their warnings.

I can lend some insight into this warning. I live in Austin and 3 of the 10 storm tracks have Ike passing right over us.

This dire warning indirectly results from Hurricane Katrina. If you recall, shortly after Katrina, another hurricane hit the region, Rita. This hurricane was to pass very close to Houston, which it did.

In what I feel was an over-reation to Katrina, the entire city of Houston was evacuated. 4 million people. My daughter and her family live in Houston. Because that evacuation was notproperly prepared for, what should have been a 2 1/2 hour drive took them 14 hours. Along a different highway, a bus evacuating elderly people was involved in a mishap and over 30 elderly people burned to death. In other words, those people ordered to evacuate from the northern half of the city did so without need. And suffered (and died) because of it. So naturally the reaction this time for people is to be a little more reluctant to leave and endure the journey.

We lived in Houston the last time it took a direct hit, 25 years ago. The hurricane was Alicia. NO evacuation was ordered, and the eye actually passed right over our house. We were without power for a week, but other than that all went well.

The greatest threat from a hurricane is from the storm surge. This particular hurricane is predicted to have a surge up to 20 feet. They put up a storm wall in Galveston after the killer early 1900s hurricane completely removed Galveston from the map.

That wall is about 12 feet high.

I certainly hope those in harm's way, in a low lying coastal area, have taken heed.

I'd just take this time for a vacation to Las Vegas - just to be on the safe side.

Forecasters are worried that many of the same conditions present when Galveston was wiped out in 1900 (6,000 dead) will be present when Ike hits this weekend. Namely, strong winds in a shallow section of the Gulf will produce a 20-foot storm surge hitting along an area potentially hundreds of miles in length.

Needless to say, it's going to be bad.

I think they meant CERTAIN DEATH AT THE PUMPS.

Here in Southern Ontario, Canada, the price of gas jumped 15 cents in most places overnight alone. That works out to almost 60 cents a gallon for you Amis.

It's mostly because of the high density coastal regions, places where coastal flooding will absolutely tear ass. Hurricanes come and go, but this is one of those storms that come once in a few decades where it's set up perfectly for a powerful storm surge.

All the talk about certain death and the like are in relation to this potentially powerful surge.

Well, I'm toughing it out here in Houston. I'll tell you guys tomorrow if I died.

CNN is now showing pictures of the water splashing over the sea wall, with the water level to the base of the wall itself. Normally there is 20 yards or so of beach. The Crystal Beach area , a little southwest of Galveston and with no seawall is already submerged. And it is still 200 miles away. Galveston still has the causeway to Houston open, so it is not too late to leave there...yet.

The computer projections I saw of a 20 foot surge had the entire island of Galveston submerged. Anyone who is still there is now being plain stupid.

Health wise maybe, give its current strength even out around the Sam Houston/45 Area is fine. The important thing is that the storm move quickly if it pushes water up into the clear lake area and than stalls the city is going to be screwed ala Allison because there will be nowhere for the rain to go.

Just remember the first and second rules of hurricane survival:

Always seek out high ground and avoid flying cars.

I remember catching Hugo or one of his cousins in Florida a few years ago. I swear I saw an UNMANNED volvo compact slide down the street due to the wind and SLAM ROCK SOLID into somebody's living room.
