I generally favor independence movements, if the Ossetians feel that they should be, then I have no qualms.

Im all for independence if they want that but it must be done without russian overseeing it, UN handling a vote, actual UN peacekeepers not Russian ones under the guise of the UN and it should be actual independence...that means from Georgia and Russia.

Ill explain slowly....Russia has a vested interest in the region hence any peacekeeping in the region should be by a country/combo of countries who has no vested interest in the region if one is going to hold a vote on independance. Iraq is a different story and one any rational person will comprehend...you are rational are you not? And the difference is no one wants to deal with Iraq because the mess was made by the US as opposed to Georgia thing which is manageable. Now is this in anyway unclear? Or shall I be forced to draw pictures for you? If however it would make you feel better Russia can take over Iraq and we'll take over Ossetia...think that will work out well? Perhaps put a bit more thought before hitting the post button in the future.

True they wont which is why any attempt at real independence is moot and cant be recognized by the world, UN etc.

Actually now it's more like as if we gave Iraq over to Iranian peacekeepers.

Well either way US is definetly not there for peacekeeping. The best thing US can do to keep peace in certain country is stay away from it.

Personally, no. I think they should either a) rejoin Georgia, or b) join with North Ossetia into a single Ossetian Republic within the Russian Federation.

It is too small to be a viable self-sustained country for the long term.

No, I don't think so.

South Ossetia is a small area, where the biggest town is 20k. AFAIK they don't have any valuable materials and would have to receive monetary aid... Not good for a country.

Some solutions could be

A) Joining Russia. Would keep their economy afloat.
B) Creating Ossetia, as N. Ossetia is much larger than S. Ossetia iirc.
C) Rejoining with Georgia. (Will be hard now though)

They you agree they should become seperated cause they already had a referendum where literally 99% of citizens agreed to seperate..Georgia claims it was 96% thouh Like that even makes a difference!
