    Default The Mysteries of Evolution

A new mobile phone tower went up in a town in the USA, and the local newspaper asked a number of people what they thought of it. Some said they noticed their cellphone reception was better. Some said they noticed the tower was affecting their health.

A local administrator was asked to comment. He nodded sagely, and said simply: "Wow. And think about how much more pronounced these effects will be once the tower is actually operational."

Gene plasticity is such a cool field. Imagine the possibilities.

When they say gene plascticity (or whatever you want to call it) it passed on, does that mean that activated genes, or certain combinations of activated genes are identically (or closely) activated in offspring?

Unless conditions change the same activated genes will be active in the offspring. The question is that there are certain conditions that can activate certain genes under a certain context. Basically our genetic junk can become usefull if certain conditions are met.

Take certain viral DNA we have. It doesn't do anything, but in certain situations it can become vital for our colective survival. It's a hard field and unpredictable. Basically trying to predict evolutive pathways.

A nice article. Pigliucci is a very good researcher.
