Default E8400 and SPQR testing results.

    Hello,

Well I finally Got my E8400 and WOW what a setup. With the 8800GTS and 2 gbs of DDR2 PC 6400 ram I was able to play a battle with close to 18,000 men and NO LAG. I have never had a battle that large with FULL MAX settings and not have Lag!

Just a heads up that this Combo Works WONDERFUL in SPQR mod.

    E8400
    Gigabyte 965P-DSL3
    OCZ 2GB DDR2 PC6400
    MSI NX8800 GTS
    WD Raptor 10krpm HD

Again I cannot STRESS how much of a improvement in Gameplay will be. I upgraded from a 661 3.6 which was OCed to 4ghz and it was a bottleneck for the GPU.

Mind you also this test was done without OCing the CPU, its at the stock 3.0ghz.

I plan to test more with Larger Numbers of men to find the limit before LAG makes the game unplayable. Basically you never have battles of 18k usually about 12k in SPQR, but sometimes it can happen. Next tests will be Sieges and Bridge Battles.

Sure, Better than that I plan to try to make a MIni Movie for SPQR with the huge battles. I tell you the truth i fought the battle with no lag. Makes me wonder how many more men I can add. lol

This is the FIRST time I could fight at FULL settings and have that many men on the field. Benchmark is 17698 on 3DMark05 and that is Non OCed. Before with the same setup just the 661 3.6 CPU I got 9400 and OCed I got 9800

Personally I am beginning to think I DONT need to overclock it, its that fast, I have no idea on Newer games, I plan to test on CoH with the Kmod, as that mod taxes systems. But that is about it for newer games that I have and it came with the VC. lol

Screens are easy to take and I will take a few, but again it doesnt show lag in screens, thats why I want a movie to show people what SPQR is like when you CAN PLAY the way you were meant to. My only regret is I wish CA would LIFT the limit of 243 men to 503 so we can have realistic Legions. The hardware is there now.

I have a wolfdale E8400 overclock to 3.9 ghz with a GTX 280 and the most I've tried is 30,000 at 8-15 fps which is still very much playable. But then again a GTX 280 is much faster than a 8800gts.

Well I guess it depends if you keep legions all around other armies to get HUGE battles. But before I tried to MAKE SURE I didnt get HIT with that Many OR I would have Lag issues. Now though I say go for it. Though I DONT like the idea of letting the AI control my Legions. Basically what I do is Have one Legion then they have an auxilia army and then a Siege Army with Possible Cavalry wing. This is more realistic to how Legions functioned that just have the legion by itself. Hence why you need money in SPQR is IF you play like I do all your money will be on Legions and auxilia across the Empire. lol

I do say its NICE to play FULL settings and have that Large of a battle without lag and this is on the STOCK settings to the CPU. I wonder if its worth to OC it, how much Better performance would one get? I guess its relative. I might go to 3.6 atleast just to match the old speed I had, but really the Performance is impressive IMO over the E6850 etc which while good doesnt perfom like the 8400 and for $150-$170 the Price is Right, especially if you have a 8800+ cant say for the Lower end Cards.

CZEpowerslave, why dont you make some movies with as many men as you can without lag and full settings and make a mini-movie! Guncam is the best software to use I hear with RTW.

1st - well, I have to keep them around, because Gauls, in their infinite wisdom, tend to send several stacks my direction every turn, and single legion cannot hold on its own, and while I play with pre-marian units so far, I need huge force.

2nd - I guess I will have to But first, I gotta enjoy some rest after six weeks of studying. But you have my word, I shall bring thee the battle.

People will believe a lie because they want it to be true; or they're afraid it's true.
Given proper motivation, almost anyone will believe almost anything. Because people are stupid, they will believe a lie because they want to believe its true, or because they're afraid it might be true. Peoples' heads are full of knowledge, facts and beliefs, and most of it is false, yet they think it all true. People are stupid; they can only rarely tell the difference between a lie and the truth, and yet they are confident they can, and so are all the easier to fool.

I wish this game supports SLI. I had a 9800 gx2 before and it was slow because there is no SLI support.

thats why any upgrades I do are based on my previous games. If a NEW game requires hardware that makes my classic games unplayable I would forget the new game. lol

    E8400
    Gigabyte 956P-DSL3
    Raptor WD HD 10K rpm
    OCZ Platinium DDR PC6200 5-5-5-7 2 1gb sticks linked.
MSA 8800 GTS which is factory OCed to GTX specs.

Basically thats all the important stuff, other than I use XP and keep background apps at bay. lol

Costs have changed the Motherboard would cost about $60 now but you can get the P35, CPU
$170. Ram about $50 now GPU about $180

So I would say about $400 should cover your expense to get an Excellent RTW game machine.

Dont know how you guys get it for that price over there. On Ebuyer that graphics card alone is Ł200 so $400.

Im getting a new machine, dont know if any of you have seen it in the other thread but im getting it with Vista 64bit, it will work wont it?
Hopefully might get 10,000 men without lag although the graphics card im getting is poor.
