    Default Family Heir

I was wondering, if you have one person set to be the heir of your family when your leader dies, but you decide to change it so a much younger person rules the family, does the previous heir become disgruntled at being "passed over" as next ruler of the Family?

Just wondered on this, as i'm playing a Julii game, and i'm thinking of having one of my 23yr old family members become the next ruler of the family.

indeed, you can change your heir if you want
but if your leader dies, it's the heir who becomes leader then, so you can change until the current leader dies

You start with a Heir, And that's gonna be your next Leader. When it happens automaticly you get another heir, in order to set another heir you have to select someone else as your New Faction Heir and thus the previous one gets this trait: disinherited.

Disinherited characters loses some of their Influnce stats, and tends to get bad traits more often after that.

So don't do that, If you really think another Heir would be better than current one.
I do that usually when a younger but talented member is present in the family. Some new characters already starts with good stats and if you guide them right they can be even greater than your previous leaders.(depending of your choice; you want them to be a good manager ? Put them in a Huge city with an upgraded Academy; you want them to command ? Send them to fight, attack rebels if there are any cause big battles could be harsh for a 16 year old commander with 3 star command. Then after getting some more stars, go and conquer.)

personally my faction heir is the one who controls my main army.

but here is a funny trick i do sometimes: assign the heir to a member who's heading into a tough fight, cos it increases his bodygaurds. then switch back later.

-1 influence, and they have a tendency to gain negative traits from then on.

I usually avoid changing my faction heir unless he is useless and there truly is another family member around with much more command, influence, management etc.

As has been said, it does matter. The family member who was previously heir gets the disinherited trait which provides -1 influence.

I did the same and only got the -1 Influence penalty for the one passed over. I trained a 16yo as the new faction heir,so he can gain skills and ancilliaries for many turns. The one I replaced was still good, just -1 influence. If there was a 'loyalty' rating then I guess it would have a stronger effect, like MTW,causing a possible rebellion or civil war upon the leaders death. But RTW you are more safer.

Once I captured the last of the Dacian towns whilst their Faction Leader was sieging another town, he immediatly became a rebel with no army and I recruited him, he kept his Faction Leader trait with a huge bodyguard

I've just started playing BI, and my faction heir is almost always a different religion from my faction leader.

I guess I don't understand the effects of religion very well yet, but having a Pagan heir take over for a Christian faction when the leader dies doesn't seem like a good situation.

Increasingly if your heir dies while the faction leader is still alive the youngest brother will take over as heir. In my past few campaigns this has happened. Surely the second oldest brother is first inline. Maybe that changes if the heir's son comes of age then he will take over as heir? I am sure that someone has investigated this and somebody knows the coding for new heirs.

I have never heard of that situation nor anyone discussing it nor anyone offering a reason and/or solution. Try it in the Tech or mod forums.

I don't know the criteria the game uses for succession, but it definitely does not matter who would be 'next in line' in real life (ie: eldest son of the king). I've had grandchildren take over when grandpa died.... Its probably based on stats (influence etc.)
