Default Jolie poster to explicit for UK

LONDON (Reuters) - Angelina Jolie might ooze Hollywood glamour, but if she's armed and looking dangerous, the actress is not welcome in Britain.

Britain's media watchdog, the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), has banned two posters of Jolie promoting the film "Wanted" after upholding complaints that the images of the gun-toting actress glamorized the use of guns and violence.

One poster showed the actress crouching and holding a gun pointing upward while the other showed her lying on her back across a car's hood, brandishing guns.

The ASA said it had received 17 complaints from people who thought the ads were irresponsible because they glorify and glamorize gun crime at a time when there is increasing public concern in Britain about it.

Some also complained that the posters for the high-tech action thriller co-starring James McAvoy and Morgan Freeman were unsuitable to be seen by children.

"We considered, that because the ads featured a glamorous actress, action poses, several images of or related to guns and aspirational text, they could be seen to glamorize the use of guns and violence," the ASA said in an online ruling.

The film's maker, Universal Pictures, defended the posters, saying the style of the advertisements reflected the film's comic-book roots and providing examples of other ads they believed were more graphic and less stylized than their posters.

Universal Pictures also said that the posters were not placed near schools and appeared in the London Underground system, which does not have a high proportion of children.

But the ASA ruling, handed down Wednesday, seemed to come a bit late.Universal, owned by General Electric Co, said the posters for the film, which was released in Britain and the United States in June, were no longer being displayed, and there were no plans for their future use.

ASA is getting out of control. This kind of crap makes me so sad. 17 complaints? I had more complaints last time I sung karaoke at the last Regimental Do in Covent Garden!

What I never understood about bodies such as the ASA, is how in a country of almost 60 million, in only takes around about 10 or so complaints to have something banned. More inexplicable are the people who bother to complain about such trivial things in the first place, you really should'nt go out if your going to be offended by a bloody poster.

Odder still is the fact that even if hundreds of people complain that the ASA is retarded, nothing is repealed, ever.

I dont find Jolie attractive. And i dont know if the poster is explicit or not.

I thought it was banned because the glamourisation of guns (specifically the youth) and not because of titty.

The complainers were probably parents in London who are scared of gun crime. Knee jerk reaction. I dont think this qualifies them as "nutts".

I will take this opportunity to say that all you Englanders really need to loosen up. Your uptight morals are sooo 19th century.
As a teenager, I was taken to various houses and flats above takeaways in the north of England, to be beaten, tortured and raped over 100 times. I was called a “white slag” and “white ****” as they beat me.

when you all calm down you might like to think its not the fact it got 17 complaints its that those complaints raised what the ASA thought was a valid issue. Also before you condone them just think about the sort of advertising you get on TV in other countries and be thankful we have a system to prevent those.

    Care to give examples?

I don't see what's so special about the ASA.
It's an organization payed for and owned by the advertisers themselves.
It's the British advertising industries way of self regulating. - but I'm sure most advertisers can self regulate perfectly on their own.

Nope, no one that has monetary profit as the goal can ever be fair.

Lol +reppings, what song was it?

As a side note why don't they just ban the whole friggin film? What about all the posters for Tomb Raider which had Angelina in a catsuit and guns? What about the poster of Bruce Willis or whoever in Sin City in a kinda executioner pose?

I don't think that people are gonna see the posters and say "Hey I want a gun now!" Those 17 people should be censored and see how they like it.
