Default Diplomacy: is there any difference?

Hey, I've been playing MTW2 on VH/VH and found that diplomacy sucks.

Is there any difference beetween a +1 influence diplomat and a +10? I know it seems logical, but I'm not sure that it affects the final 'negociation' with other factions.

I tried searching on the forums but couldn't get awnser.

    Thanks.

Higher diplomacy characters do get their way more often (higher probability that a deal offered will be accepted by the other side.)

Noble Nick is right but the reputation that you have globaly and your relations with the faction you are trying to deal with will play a role. For Example I was allied with Milan once, I wanted to have a better Relation with them so I wanted to give them a gift 200 florins per turn for like 25 turns and they didn't accept it, a couple of turns later they've attacked me. probably because I had an enemy thats was their ally, but still Relationship/reputation and the degree of your agent does affect your negotiations.

    Hope this helps

Honestly, in Medieval 2 total war, all diplomats are good for is getting trade rights, which you can get with a 1 influence diplomat. Alliances are aesily broken by the ai for pretty much no reason at all. So all you have to get is map information and trade rights, the rest is worthless. Then send your diplomat on a boat ride so you don't have to pay for him anymore

Diplomacy in vanilla is worthless. The AI will backstab you regardless, and Trade Rights are the only thing worth anything. In Mods though with different AIs, it tends to be better. Eg: Since getting SS6.1, I haven't been backstabbed by an Ally ONCE. Anyone who borders me and is neutral generally attacks after a while, but allies do not backstab.

You guy's should try LTC Gold, it's IMO the best balanced MOD out there.

    Thanks for the awnsers.

But, for example, I'm playing with Spain. The moment I take Zaragoza, Valencia or Cordoba, Milan and Sicily go for my ass ASAP. I think it's very stupid how the AI works in this case. Anyways, I can deffend myself pretty good. After some battles, they open diplomatics relashioships with me (I guess the pope has something to do) and offer me 'Ceaser Fire'. Of course I want some money. I usually take 5000+ plus Trade Rights. After 15+ turns they attack me again and I take their florins one more time... AI sucks here.

So, do you think that with a 10 influence diplomat I can get more florins from this sinners? or perhaps it only works when a deal is 'balanced' and the AI may not take it unless it's talking to this charismatic and well-knowledge man.

I will be doing some testing on this (don't know if happens only in VH campaingn). I gladly accept more points of view!

The only thing I can say about Milan and Sicily is that because of their starting position, they can only expand on the Islands, your borders and also Tripoli at south. So maybe that is why they attack you. I must add that Milan are the same as the Greeks in Rome, Treatchury and backstabing faction.
